The User Experience (UX) Design Lead grows our internal design team, matures our practices, and manages the team of JMCRS Product designers.  The JMCRS Product Design team is focused on how IT systems and custom software can drive value to internal and external users. The Lead UX Designer will perform design work and support technologies teams so that The Jackson Laboratory can meet our Business and Research goals.

The UX Design Lead will support the needs of the team as they perform user research, data analysis, prototyping, validation, usability testing, and dual-track agile delivery techniques.  As UX Designer, this role will also lead design activities and facilitate the collaborative design of digital products, customer experience, and IT solutions. The incumbent possesses a technical understanding of current and emerging digital solutions and IT systems as well as relevant business process knowledge. The lead designer will support the team’s creation of and use of user journey maps, user personas, and high-fidelity mockups and prototypes.  They will help the team establish or mature best practices and select best-fit design tools. 

Responsibilities

  • Manage team, mature UX practices - Coach inidual designers on career and professional growth.  Define staffing needs and hire the best candidates.  Strengthen design partnerships across the lab by leading community of practice sessions, driving enablement outcomes, and communicating the unique value of UX design.  Create and propose new design guidelines to enhance branding, aesthetics, and communications across Jax. Design and communicate new models for user and web navigation, information architecture, interaction design, and usability.  Leads identification of and advocacy for user needs to the JAX IT technology teams, product management teams, and business leadership. Serves as an evangelist for the user and the ultimate external customer experience.
  • User Research & Experience Design - Create visualizations, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes to improve business and IT understanding of new processes and user experiences. Iterate on designs based on stakeholder, user, and customer feedback; conduct experiments, spikes, and other techniques to validate user impacts.  Conduct various types of user research including direct interviews of internal users, external customers, and various stakeholders. Facilitate collaborative design thinking sessions to create business and developer understanding of new digital business opportunities. Perform analysis of user research and create appropriate design artifacts such as journey maps, user personas, empathy maps, storyboards, stakeholder maps, and relevant assessment deliverables.
  • Communication and Collaboration - Lead collaborative design activities to drive insights and consensus among Jax decision-makers in order to support customer-centric digital experiences. Through storytelling, effectively communicate research goals, methods, findings, and outcomes to anyone and everyone. Communicate, visually and in other forms, recommendations that are going to be impactful and attainable. Incorporate business limitations and technical feasibility.

Qualifications

  • College diploma or university degree in the field of design, visual design, or digital/software design
  • Familiarity with tools and techniques to drive collaborative design, communications, prototyping, and visual representations of user experience.
  • Experience and understanding of design thinking, LeanUX or similar collaborative design and development models
  • Effective written, oral, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong ability to synthesize ergent research and insights and communicate clearly to developers and product management.
  • Experience with tools and techniques to drive collaborative design, communications, prototyping, and visual representations of user experience.
  • 6+ years of experience as an experience designer, with at least 2 years in a role where the designer worked in a leadership capacity.
  • Masters in product design, or other similar, preferred.
  • Design thinking, LeanUX or similar, certifications showing coaching and practitioner level (or equivalent)
  • Ability to lead design activities, coach designers and developers, and communicate with IT and business leaders.
  • Proven ability to design exceptional customer experiences.
  • Experience with and ability to lead others in the use of tools and techniques to drive collaborative design, communications, prototyping, and visual representations of user experience.
