Backend Engineering Consultant**Fully Remote | Part Time | Equity Based
**Roles and Responsibilities:
**The Backend Engineering Consultant will take requirements directly from the CTO, and independently design and develop robust, production grade solutions. This is an inidual contributor role. The Engineer will be focused exclusively on design and development, not mentorship, cross training or management. Primary responsibilities include:
**Develop Microservices using Python
**Our primary language is Python, and our API framework is FastAPI. The Engineer will spend much of their time designing, developing and extending Python modules to power the core logic of our graph.
**Create and Deploy Containers using Docker and GH Actions
**We take a container-first approach, leveraging Docker to encapsulate our products for deployment to cloud infrastructure. We use GitHub Actions for CI/CD to target infrastructure such as ECR. The Engineer will create Dockerfiles and GH workflow files to define the necessary environment for each application and deploy it.
**Create Infrastructure Across Cloud Providers using IaC
**Our product is intended to be used across all major cloud providers, e.g. AWS, GCP, Azure. As such, we leverage Terraform to declaratively define services across providers. **
Requirements:****Education and Relevant Experience
**M.S. or B.S. in a S.T.E.M. or quantitative field is highly preferred, however, it is not required. Relevant experience with proven contributions is the highest indicator of potential for success in our opinion. We’ll look for 10+ years in a range of job titles or roles that overlap with the Roles and Responsibilities section. A clean GitHub demonstrating related skills is most important. However, we understand that many professionals don’t have time to create or contribute to public facing repositories, so we encourage applications from Engineers without a robust portfolio.
**Deliverable, Cost and Quality Mindset
**danzek.ai™ is a startup, as such, we must be extremely focused on balancing time, cost and quality. The Engineer will need to select libraries and services that are cheap, yet effective. The Engineer will also need to design solutions which are extensible and carefully selected regarding scope. Lastly, the Engineer will be expected to mitigate tech debt at all costs by focusing on best practices, modern patterns and careful implementation.
**Trust and Integrity
**As a startup, our IP is extremely valuable. We expect the Engineer to keep our code and designs secret, treating them with the utmost care from an InfoSec perspective. We’re offering the Engineer equity, as such, they have a tangible interest in protecting their ownership.
**Flexibility
**As a consultant, the Engineer may work on days and times that are most convenient for them, and performance will be based upon contributions, not hours worked. We also don’t measure performance in KPIs such as a SLOC, which are often decoupled from quality and tangible benefits.

**What you will be doing
**Our Circuit Marketing Sites (CMS) team plays a crucial role in showcasing our products to the world. But right now, our marketing site isn’t keeping pace with our product innovations, and we’re looking for an experienced engineer to help us change that.
You’ll be responsible for owning entire pages and sections and translating design concepts into performant, SEO-friendly, and visually stunning experiences. There are no hard deadlines, no micro-management, and no layers of approvals—just the freedom to build high-quality web experiences at your own pace.
Once our core site is up to speed, you’ll have the opportunity to build mini-apps and interactive tools that capture attention, drive traffic, and generate leads. We love experimenting with creative ideas and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

What you won’t be doing
- Having lots of meetings. Expect ~one meeting per week. If you rely on frequent check-ins to stay on track, we’re not the right fit.
- Working to unrealistic deadlines. We optimize for quality and long-term progress, not burnout!
- Managing people. While you’ll share knowledge and manage your own projects, this is a hands-on inidual contributor role.
We’d love to hear from you if you:
- Have 6+ years of experience in frontend development, with strong expertise in React, TypeScript, and modern full-stack meta-frameworks (e.g., Next.js, Astro, Remix, or similar).
- Like building fast, SEO-optimized, and visually stunning marketing websites.
- Understand performance optimization techniques, including server-side rendering (SSR) and static site generation (SSG).
- Are experienced working on public-facing marketing sites with a focus on performance.
- Work well independently and can figure things out, even when requirements change.
- Communicate clearly and enjoy working with designers to build the best websites possible.
- Can spot a simpler way to do something and aren’t afraid to suggest it!
- Are based in UTC-5 to UTC+2 time zones
- Can speak and write in English at a professional level.
It would be nice if you have:
- An eye for UI/UX and animations, with experience bringing designs to life.
- Familiarity with Sanity.io.
- Experience with Next.js
- Accessibility experience
**Who we are, what we do, and how it’s going
**Back in 2017, we saw an issue with last-mile delivery - it was too complicated and stressful for drivers. Circuit started a mission to change that by choosing to develop an app that put the driver, and their customers, first.
We were astounded by the response we received. Within our first year, we had almost 1,000 customers, $100k in ARR, and a team consisting of our two co-founders, Jack and Pol. With a lean team of ~40, we’ve grown to $25M ARR, helping over 100,000 drivers deliver more than 1 billion packages worldwide—about 20 every second!
Our Hiring Process
Our hiring process for this role has five stages (if we include the 10-minute application!) and usually takes ~three weeks for the whole process. At every step, you will be able to ask questions of your own and make sure that we are the right choice for you.
**
Apply**Upload your resume and fill out our application form. It takes about 10 minutes to complete, and we don’t ask you to repeat anything that’s already on your CV!

**About Learning Tapestry**
Hi! We're Learning Tapestry. We're a 25+ person all-remote, global organization dedicated to making digital learning "just work" for educators and learners alike. We solve hard problems in complex education technology environments. We’re a triple bottom line company: we make a profit like any good business; our work makes the world better (“social impact”); and we strive to create a healthy internal work environment for everyone who works here. For our staff we believe in flexible work locations and working arrangements. We empower all of our team members to manage their schedules and adjust as necessary. We're focused on results and impact, not locations and hours. We hire people with great technical ability, but we also expect everyone at Learning Tapestry to have a strong personal character and solid communication skills. We highly value effective software architecture, test-driven development methods, and good project management methodology. We believe in having a strong CI and deployment pipeline that enables us to focus on writing good software.
*\*What We’re Looking For**
**You’re an exceptional professional software engineer with at least 8 years of software engineering experience. You’re comfortable in multiple languages, but in particular you are strong in backend coding using Ruby on Rails, and frontend engineering with React (or you are expert in an alternative frontend framework and are willing to learn/use React for some projects). Our ideal candidate is available 30-40 hours per week during US Central standard business hours. We ask everyone who works here to be fluent or highly proficient in written and spoken English, and easily understood by US-based speakers (we ask for this to allow everyone in the company to be able to communicate with each other, rather than having to go through intermediates). Please read through this entire job description before applying, as there is critical information about how to apply included.
Please do not apply by reaching out to other company emails or iniduals: please note that applying using other communication channels will result in your application not being considered.
**Required Skills and Experience**
- At least eight years of Software Engineering Experience, with a minimum of five years doing senior engineering work such as solution design, architecture, code review, full stack engineering, or similar tasks.
- You have very good written communication skills, fluent written English, and comfortable, clear spoken English.
- Must be available during US Central standard business hours (UTC -6)
- You can write in multiple languages fluently, efficiently, and reliably, and are expert in writing in Ruby on Rails, and React (or similar modern JS framework).
- Help maintain professional standards for the entire organization.
- Have deep, substantial expertise in multiple programming environments.
- Capable of executing projects across multiple technical domains (“full stack,” data architecture, devops, etc).
- Have an interest and ability to learn new technical subjects when you need to solve new types of problems.
- Can pursue investigation and problem solving into issues to resolve them, and can also recognize when it’s more efficient to ask for help vs push forward to solve a problem. Believe that all technical problems are solvable with enough effort.
- Have humility and kindness with regards to others and their own abilities. Seek to help others; seek to share what you know; want to see your work have an impact in the world.
- Substantial, practical expertise in implementing:
- SQL-based databases
- Can design complex data structure implementations.
- Has experience with schema and other data migrations to meet new code and feature complexity requirements.
- Can write SQL queries and make performance optimizations.
- Can implement standard connectivity to/from SQL servers.
- DevOps
- Deployment and CI/CD
- Have a solid knowledge of designing and implementing devops pipelines, using tools such as docker, kubernetes, or related systems.
- Can develop strategies for managing cached data to optimize performance, using tools like Fastly, Cloudfront, Cloudflare, other CDNs, Varnish, or Redis.
- Understand basic infosec principles to design, evaluate, and operate systems securely.
- Solutions Design / Systems Architecture
- Can work with business analysts, product managers, and senior executives to understand the business problems and propose, adapt, and design technical solutions to meet those needs.
- Can translate technical concepts to non-technical audiences and simplify complex concepts without oversimplifying.
- Able to explain technical issues in actionable ways to non-technical people.
- Can design and configure/operate the technical systems required to implement a technical solution.
- Understand cryptography and security enough to design systems that use existing login/identity standards securely (OAuth2, JWTs, etc).
- Avoids overly complex technology solutions, preferring complexity levels based on the needs of specific projects.
- Recognize that the best technical solution is not always the best business solution, and can negotiate with stakeholders accordingly.
- Are not overly enamored with brand new technologies, and have the maturity and experience to evaluate new technology against existing solutions objectively.
- Can write clear, simple specifications to reflect how a system will be built.
- Testing and Reliability Engineering
- Understand TDD vs manual QA Engineering, and where each is appropriate in developing software.
- Insist on building automated testing frameworks when necessary for software pipelines, and know how to implement “enough testing” without relying on a “test everything” approach.
- Can design functional monitoring solutions for uptime management.
- Capable of implementing test automation using tools such as Cypress, Postman, Swagger/OpenAPI.
- Can write developer docs for a project to assist a new engineer in learning to develop in a codebase. Can train and support new engineers on existing systems, to get them up and running quickly.
- Can create uptime failure recovery documentation: what to do when a system fails.
- Can debug and analyze production systems for faults.
- Can conduct performance testing using K6, New Relic, Skylight, JMeter, and similar tools to find performance issues, design faults and system optimizations.
- SQL-based databases
**Bonus skills**
- Experience in Ed Tech Field (Education projects)

**To Apply**
Apply with your resume and a cover letter. In order to be considered for this role, please confirm your working availability and your hourly rate (in USD) in your cover letter.
**About You**

You’re comfortable in a remote work environment, with team members from different time zones, countries, and cultures. You manage your own time well and are a self-starter. You have a distraction-free place you can use for work that offers reliable Internet access (suitable for voice/video calls and development uses), either in your home or a local co-working facility.
You are experienced and well-versed in the productivity tools we use, like Google Apps & Hangouts, Slack, and Harvest for time tracking.
You’re fluent or highly proficient in written and spoken English.
Please do not hesitate to apply if you do not match these requirements exactly but think you could be a good fit for this position. Just let us know why you’re a good fit!
**Equal Opportunity**
Learning Tapestry is an equal opportunity employer and encourages iniduals of all ethnic and racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities to apply. We are also particularly interested in iniduals who have lived in or worked with underserved communities such as low-income, gender nonconforming, disabled, or indigenous peoples.
