About the Role

HotMic is a live streaming start-up, backed by Founders Fund, with deep experience in creator led experiences. We are building a new app and looking for a freelance designer to help with the front end. We are doing the wireframes and UX but we aren't good at pure design. Hopefully you are and can help!
The new app will be a community-based competitive live streaming app where fans don’t just watch — they pick winners. The app is aimed at GenZ with US based teenagers as the primary target. We are looking to hire a freelance designer to help design the entire app from wireframes but we are starting with a simple design challenge. We will choose the freelancer designer that creates the funnest experience for our users. Sending previous portfolio designs are perfectly acceptable but anyone sending a sample design based on the specifications below will receive special consideration.
🎨 HotMic Battle Screen – Viewer Design Requirements
The app will have communities that have specifc rules on the battle format. Communites will mainly be about sports teams. HotMic AI will come up with fun, interesting, and provokative questions to spur debate on the community topic. At the heart of the experience is a live “battle” between two creators who go head-to-head in a timed, five-question challenge. Each contestant gets a specified amount of time to answer questions in a debate style format. After both responses, the audience votes in real time to decide the winner of that round.
We designed a pilot challenge for designers who want to show us something specific. The assignment focuses on designing the Battle Screen for Viewers — the most important screen in the app. It’s where the live show happens. A strong design here should feel dynamic, competitive, and fun, fun, fun — something that draws viewers in and makes them want to vote, react, and come back for more.
🌟 Project Scope
You are designing only the Battle Screen from the viewer’s perspective. This is not the contestant interface. Submissions should focus on the live viewing experience, including layout, voting, question display, chat, and optional engagement features.
🔑 Core Design Requirements
1. 🎥 Video Layout
There are always two live contestants on screen.
Both must have equal visual weight — either top/bottom or side/side. Designer’s choice.
They can be full-screen or partial, but should be large enough to clearly see facial expressions.
Only one contestant speaks at a time — it should be visually obvious who is speaking (e.g., highlight, glow, audio animation).
The non-speaking contestant may be muted — this could be reflected visually as well.
2. 🗳️ Voting Interface
It must be clear that this is a competitive match and that viewers control the outcome.
Voting should be fun and rewarding, not just functional.
Display who is currently winning the vote using a creative element (not just numbers). Options might include:
A slider or tug-of-war meter
A progress bar shaped like a battle gauge
Animated icons or energy builds tied to votes
Users can vote multiple times with a built-in time delay between votes (e.g., a cooldown).
Emoticons or reactions can be integrated with voting, but it must be clear that they affect the score.
3. 💬 Chat Display
Viewer chat must be present.
The input will use the native iOS panel — you can ignore that part.
Chat output could appear in:
A side panel
A dedicated lower-third zone
As an overlay on top of video, if legibility is maintained
4. ❓ Question Display
The current question must be the most visually prominent element aside from the video.
The viewer must immediately understand what the contestants are answering.
You may position it anywhere, but it should:
Stand out (consider bold fonts, outlines, shadows)
Use legible text sizes on mobile
Suggest use of contrasting color or motion (e.g., fade in/out, animate in)
Please recommend fonts, colors, and styling to emphasize the question without overpowering the rest of the screen.
5. 🔘 Controls
A Back button should always be present to return to the home screen.
A Share button should trigger the native iOS share sheet.
Button placement should not interfere with video or key interaction zones.

We’re seeking to hire a talented Brand Designer to join our brand design team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead projects for the brand team and own client communication + task management
Mentor and guide fellow team members
Define and create a visual language as an extension of the brand (illustrations, icons, colors, typography, animations, etc.) and own all aspect of brand design for projects
