We’re hiring a Senior Product Designer to join our Engage team!

As a Senior Product Designer on the Engage team, you’ll design world-class user experiences for transit agencies who use Spare to manage processes like paratransit eligibility, complaints, and other municipal services.

This role follows a hybrid schedule. We require team members to be in the office on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with the option to work remotely on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Our office is located in downtown Vancouver, and we believe this balance fosters strong collaboration while supporting flexibility.

About the Role ✨

You will…

Create fantastic user experiences:

  • Improve life for transit agencies and their riders by adding new features and improving existing functionality.

  • Spend time with users in person and remotely, understanding their needs, wants, and mental models.

  • Advocate for user experience, usability, and accessibility.

  • Maximize clarity and simplicity within a complex, configurable product. Be a good steward of our platform and ensure that it remains a strong foundation for Spare’s future.

Collaborate with a great team:

  • Work closely with the software developers and product manager on the Engage team to strategize, make product decisions, and plan work.

  • Collaborate with the Design team to provide feedback and improve our systems, guidelines, and processes for product and communications work.

  • As part of the Product team, contribute to overall product strategy and reflect on the principles of creating great products at Spare.

  • Collaborate with all teams at Spare to consistently deliver high-quality products for our current and future customers.

About You ✨

You have…

  • End to end product design experience: You’ve successfully taken complex designs from research to concepting to implementation many times. You’ve probably got at least 5 years of product design experience, maybe more.

  • Web app knowledge: In-depth knowledge of modern web UI patterns, best practices, and tradeoffs. Hopefully you can show us some of the cool stuff you’ve worked on.

  • Comfort leading user research for your projects: You have the ability to build rapport and elicit information from users, put yourself in their shoes, and translate what you’ve heard into designs that fit their needs.

  • Web accessibility knowledge: Experience designing to WCAG accessibility standards. You can use a screenreader and make recommendations about what to change to improve the experience.

  • An understanding of how web products are made: You don’t need to write code, but it helps to understand what’s under the hood of the UI.

  • An eye for detail: You can pick out the tiniest inconsistencies in your own and others’ design work.

  • Passion for what you do: User-centered design is something that you can talk about all day, and providing accessible transit around the world excites you.

  • A whole-product mindset: Experience working with smaller teams, wearing multiple hats, and taking a leading role in pushing an entire product forward.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to Have:

  • An interest in transit, mobility, or govtech.

  • Previous experience in the mobility or transit industry, or in designing for highly configurable B2B SaaS products.

  • Ability to write HTML and CSS.

  • Experience working on products built with React or similar technologies.

Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of colour are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification in the job posting.

At Spare, we are committed to creating a erse and inclusive environment so we strongly encourage you to apply even if you don't believe you meet every single qualification outlined. We also do our best to respond to all applications we receive.
