Job Description:

CommonLit is a nonprofit EdTech organization dedicated to providing high-quality literacy instruction to low-income students and students of color to prepare them for success in college and careers. We operate a free online reading and writing program, www.commonlit.org, that is used by millions of teachers and students worldwide each month. We are a quickly growing team of passionate professionals – many of whom are former teachers. Our team is now over 120 full-time employees spread across ~30 states.

Position Overview:

CommonLit is looking for an engineer who can provide direct help to our User Support and District Success teams. As a Support Engineer, you’ll help the support team investigate issues that require engineering help, fix high-priority bugs, and work with rotating members of our engineering team on “flex” who are supporting our users. You’ll be the glue and the stable member of this team. We want to ensure that students and educators have a consistently great and reliable experience with CommonLit and your work will help ensure that happens.

Responsibilities:

  • Investigate and triage issues with our User Support and District Success teams that require technical help
  • Fix high-priority issues with great code and tests
  • Collaborate with our engineering team and other internal teams on improvements to our internal software
  • Work with educator-facing staff to improve our bug reporting and resolution process

Qualifications:

  • 2-5 years experience with Ruby on Rails including some work on a user-facing production application
  • Strong understanding of SQL
  • Working knowledge of React and CSS
  • Strong communication skills
  • You live in (and will be working from) the United States and have work authorization
  • You have a commitment to improving equity of opportunity for students of color

Additional Considerations:

  • This role involves prolonged periods sitting/standing at a desk and working on a computer
  • CommonLit will provide a computer and necessary software to complete the role

Salary: $105,000-$125,000 per year

CommonLit is committed to fostering a positive company culture, promoting work-life balance, and supporting employees through life’s changes. We provide the following benefits:

-Generous time off including 15 paid holidays a year, paid time off accruals, sick leave, 12 weeks of paid parental leave, volunteering and school visitation leave, jury duty leave, and bereavement and compassionate leave. Additionally, we offer 2 floating holidays annually.

We are a remote-first company, and have employees in almost 30 states and Washington, D.C. In keeping with our efforts to create a collaborative and constructive workplace even in a remote environment, we have many engagement opportunities throughout the year. These include monthly remote activities (ie. dumpling making, yoga, virtual escape room), monthly “CoffeeLit” time to get to know colleagues, a yearly all-staff retreat, and more!
