Director of Engineering

Anywhere, United States of America

Reporting to our CTO, the Director of Engineering is responsible for hands-on leadership of our Engineering team. You’ll develop a clear understanding of our business strategy and objectives, and this context will guide you in your decisions, and in continually ensuring that the Engineering team is focused on work that aligns with the objectives.

You’ll be responsible for hiring, managing, mentoring, and professionally developing team members across multiple specializations frontend & backend software development, QA, DevOps, and engineering management. You’ll earn the trust of the team by demonstrating your commitment to servant leadership and embodying the team’s values.

You’ll be responsible for ensuring our code and infrastructure are secure, stable, and scalable. You’ll apply your extensive experience as a software developer/architect to master our codebase, identify areas of weakness and risk, and lead the team in developing a strategy for improvement.

You’ll be a strong technical partner for our Product Management team, helping to plan an evolving roadmap that strikes the right balance between features that drive business growth and a sensible amount of refactor and tech debt payoff. Your technical expertise combined with your understanding of the business will inform your sense of priority, advising on what’s critical to address sooner rather than later. You’ll help the team break up large projects into milestones to accelerate delivery and iteration.

You’ll also be a strong technical partner for our Operations team, ensuring that our code and data model reliably support the operational needs of the business. You’ll be ready when issues arise, applying your thorough understanding of our tech stack, assessing root causes quickly, advising and implementing (or delegating) short-term solutions, and planning longer term work to improve the robustness of our system.

You’ll help the team establish standards and best practices. You will hold our Engineering team accountable both technically and culturally, leading by example with a commitment to excellence in your hands-on work as well as your verbal and written communication.
