About pganalyze

At pganalyze, we’re redefining how developers optimize one of the world’s most popular databases, PostgreSQL. Our software gives companies like Atlassian, Robinhood, and Notion the tools to solve their most complex Postgres performance challenges, ensuring their mission-critical applications run smoothly at scale.

By joining us, you’ll tackle the complex technical and user experience problems at the heart of large Postgres deployments, collaborate with a passionate team and open source community, and, together, help shape the future of Postgres. Our product is heavy on automated analysis and custom visualizations, and we build advisors to make automatic recommendations, such as the best index to fix a slow query.

We are a fully remote company, with the core team based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our company is independent, self-funded, and profitable, giving us complete control over our product roadmap and priorities. We emphasize autonomy and focus time by having few meetings per week.

We welcome people of different backgrounds, abilities, experiences and perspectives. Having a work environment that is erse, inclusive and focuses on learning from one another is central to how we operate. Working together is a form of community, and we care about the shared spaces being safe and supportive.

About the role

You will enjoy working at pganalyze if you care about solving customer’s problems end-to-end based on a comprehensive understanding of their infrastructure, and the role of the Postgres databases in it. You will work with Enterprise customers on integrating and adopting pganalyze to level up their organization’s observability practices, and train customers on pganalyze’s monitoring functionality, Advisors and Query Tuning.

Your core responsibility: To help onboard customers to the product by resolving issues they experience in their infrastructure (be it AWS, GCP, Azure or on-premise), commonly when deploying our pganalyze Enterprise Server product. Your work will also involve having an understanding of common reasons customers choose pganalyze, and having a good understanding of Postgres, being able to jump into the details to figure out how Postgres behaves in certain situations, to guide customers towards a comprehensive solution.

You will directly work with our VP of Sales, as well as our Founder & CEO on strategic deals, and develop the playbook for integrating pganalyze in complex customer environments. Our team is cross-functional, and our goal is to improve the pganalyze product where we can, to allow repeated delivery of a great customer experience.

Whilst this role is customer-centric, we anticipate travel to be minimal as most of our customer communications are online during US day time.

At pganalyze you will:

  • Work on closing strategic Enterprise deals by quickly identifying integration issues and partnering with customers to resolve them
  • Write automation code and scripts to help customers solve implementation problems
  • Think creatively how to bridge the gap from product capabilities to a customer’s requirements
  • Improve our integration with common deployment methods such as Kubernetes, for example by contributing to our Helm charts
  • Work on better product documentation and enable customers to use pganalyze more effectively
  • Participate in our support rotation, and help drive improvements to how we handle customer support (our support rotation is currently staffed by our engineering team)
  • Help with new product development by gathering feedback in collaboration with our design lead (learn more about our design principles)
  • Collaborate with other engineers on shipping new functionality end-to-end

Previously, you have:

  • Worked professionally for 5 years as a solutions/sales engineer, or have at least 5 years of software engineering experience with an active interest to move into a customer-centric role
  • Worked with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP or Azure for at least 3 years
  • Written code with Rust, Go or Ruby for at least 3 years
  • Written code that fetches data and/or interacts with cloud provider APIs
  • Worked closely with customers, and have strong technical communication skills
  • Used Postgres for multiple projects, and are familiar with using “EXPLAIN” on a query
  • Created indexes on a Postgres database based on a query being slow
  • Structured your work and set your schedule to optimize for your own productivity

Optionally, you also have:

  • Presented complex technical topics to an external audience
  • Worked in environments where Kubernetes is the deployment method of choice
  • Used APM and tracing tools to understand slow requests end-to-end
  • Written your own Postgres extensions or contributed to the Postgres project
  • Developed technical demos end-to-end, from the concept to the implementation
  • Hosted webinars on complex technical products
