Director of Social Media

Who We Need & What You’ll Do

As a key member of the digital content and product leadership team, the Director of Social Content and Programming is responsible for establishing and executing the overall social strategy, development of the social editorial calendar, creation of social content and where applicable, execution of promotional plans, across all social channels for the AccuWeather portfolio. The position will be primarily focused on AccuWeather’s consumer media properties (AccuWeather.com, AccuWeather app and AccuWeather Network linear and streaming), however this leader will initially advise, then build, a small team that’s focused on business customer engagement for AccuWeather for Business.

While an existing social infrastructure exists, our social capabilities are in their infancy. This leader has the opportunity to make a significant impact by architecting a big vision for social and driving audiences to engage with AccuWeather content across all platforms and devices. The Director will be maniacal with measuring effectiveness and implement a data driven mindset to the team that they lead. This person will possess an in-depth understanding of all social media platforms, be an excellent writer, have a strong visual sense and understanding of how to drive engagement.

The key objective of this role is to ensure that all social media efforts align with overall communication strategies and drive engagement (particularly traffic) to AccuWeather properties. The ideal candidate should also be comfortable working directly with internal teams including editors & content creators, on air broadcasters, product managers, marketing, creative and business leadership. The Director will be entrepreneurial because their team will be small initially proving results will lead to growth in team size.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop, manage and execute social editorial execution across all social platforms including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube and Tik Tok.
  • Oversight of day-to-day operations of the social editorial team; recognizing that weather happens at any time or moment and being ready to fully execute the agreed social plans (e.g. hurricanes, snowstorms, extreme weather)
  • Ensure creativity across all social pages while being responsible for approving content rollout strategy, scheduling, and reporting; be the standard bearer of quality
  • Bring to life the AccuWeather brand voice and creative look to ensure brand consistency; work closely with internal stakeholders who oversee various aspects of the AccuWeather brand
  • Establish KPIs for the social strategy, measure meticulously and report out frequently. Be data and insights led in all decision-making
  • Partner with Sales/Integrated Marketing to identify and create revenue enhancing content opportunities; have a commercial mindset
  • Manage the content needs of the social team; liaise with the digital managing editor and other stakeholders on asset needs (e.g., video)
  • Be a leader of a small nimble team; create business cases that demonstrate value and justify further investment and growth
  • Collaborate closely with the other audience development functions such as Push; build a cohesive strategy to engage audiences
  • Work with Marketing and agency partners to build relationships with influencers and to establish influencer strategy and goals
  • Coordinate efforts to best respond to and engage consumers across social channels with Content and Customer Service teams
  • Analyze competitive landscape to create informed social strategy plans, stay current on the social media platform updates and new techniques in consumer-facing social media opportunities.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Digital Media, or a related field
  • 7-10 years of Social Media experience in addition to experience managing a team. Previous experience working within a digital publishing organization will be highly attractive
  • Proven track record of growing followers across all platforms
  • Proficiency in using web/social monitoring, scheduling, and analytic tools such as Sprout Social, Google Analytics, Pars.ly and others
  • Excellent copy writing and editing abilities, outstanding verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
  • Video and photo editing knowledge are key
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail, and a demonstrated ability in managing multiple projects while working effectively with cross-functional team members
  • Proven ability to conceptualize, create and execute social media strategy and campaigns while overseeing the daily responsibilities of a robust social media presence
  • A team player who thrives in a collaborative work environment and takes initiative and functions effectively, both independently and as a member of a team
