Hi, I'm Ajay, and I'm tired.
For the past seven years, I've been managing 75 servers across AWS, a dozen more at various other providers, trying to keep my users' emails out of Spam, studying SPF and DMARC records, fighting with my overloaded IIS servers, tuning ridiculously complex SQL queries, figuring out how to stop my 5 TB database from growing so fast, all the while building new features and fixing bugs for my SaaS platform. I run GMass, a popular email automation platform. We've grown every single year and we're finally at the point where I want to offload the management of our systems onto someone else. Want to ease my pain? First, let me tell you about the tech environment GMass is built on. 90% of our infrastructure is hosted at AWS, and 10% is hosted across several more traditional hosting companies. In total, there are about 85 servers, including lots of IIS web servers, a couple SQL Servers, one MySQL server, and a bunch of SMTP servers. Most of our backend code is in C#/.NET Standard, but our front-end, which is a Chrome extension, is JavaScript. The overarching goals of this position is to make sure GMass is always up and running and emails are getting delivered in a timely manner. Issues we encounter on a regular basis:- Our senders are overwhelmed and sending too slowly. Need to fire up some more servers.
- A domain or IP has been blacklisted. Need to figure out a workaround.
- An IIS server isn't responding fast enough. Diagnose.
- A disk on a critical server is about to fill up.
- An abuser has penetrated our network and needs to be stopped.
- We've received an abuse complaint from an upstream provider, and we have 24 hours to respond.
Technical skills that you should have:
- You have a deep understanding of how email is sent
- You know how to manage an IIS server
- You know how to query databases. You don't need to be a full fledged DBA, but the more you know, the better.
- You understand email deliverability and factors that impact it.
- You have a thorough understanding of the DNS system.
- You're already familiar with AWS.
There's an element of email deliverability to this role. You should be well versed in these protocols:
- SPF
- DKIM
- DMARC
- SMTP
Bonus points if you've worked with transactional email services like SendGrid, Mailgun, Mandrill, and Amazon SES. DevOps? You'll notice that this is a "sysadmin" role rather than a DevOps role. While there are elements of engineering and development that will make this role easier, it still falls better within the scope of a sysadmin role. More about me:I created GMass seven years ago, and I love the system, company, and user base. I believe GMass has a shot at becoming a tech household name. I live in Dayton, Ohio with my wife and kids. I work a lot, because I love my work. You can find me on Twitter at @PartTimeSnob. I'm on LinkedIn too but not as active there as on Twitter: https://linkedin.com/in/ajaygoel999
Ready to rescue me?
I prefer you send me an email directly to ajay AT wordzen DOT com, and tell me about yourself and how you fit with this role. The subject line can be whatever you like, but please include the word "sysadmin" in it so I don't miss your email. My policy is that if you put effort into your email to me, you'll get a response from me.Time zones: SBT (UTC +11), GMT (UTC +0), CET (UTC +1), EET (UTC +2), MSK (UTC +3), AST (UTC -4), FKST (UTC -3), CVT (UTC -1), WAT (UTC +1), SAST (UTC +2), EAT (UTC +3)

_As an author for Baeldung, you’ll work within a team of authors and editors that will provide guidance and feedback on your articles and code.
Our writing guidelines are important to ensure a good quality of the article, as well as consistency across articles. Here are the formatting, code, and writing guidelines we use:
The publishing process starts with you choosing a topic to work on (we have a list of open topics you can choose from, or you can suggest your own). You’ll then work with an editor to create an outline and provide a draft and supporting code.
The editor will help you get your articles over the finish line. They’re going to do reviews, offer guidance with technical and language feedback, and generally be helpful.
Once the article is ready, we hit publish.
As for how quickly you’d like to write – that’s fully up to you. For example, we have great authors publishing one article weekly, and we have authors publishing an article every month or so.
Budgets
The budget for each article is based on your author level and the number of words.
Here are some typical budgets used by authors:
- Level 12 – 750 words – 80$
- Level 12 – 1000 words – 85$
- Level 15 – 750 words – 88$
- Level 15 – 1000 words – 92$
The level is based on the feedback from your editors on 3 metrics: writing, technical, and communication. When you start, you’ll be at level 1, then you’ll progress as you improve (the max level is 20).
Basically, the better the quality of your writeups, the higher the payment will be.
Here’s the full list of budget levels on the site.
Applying
Before applying, you should have at least a couple of years of experience working as a developer or actively involved in the Linux ecosystem. The articles will be code-centric, so being in the trenches and able to code is instrumental.
Good command of the English language is also important.
You can also find the contribution guidelines on our site: https://www.baeldung.com/linux/contribution-guidelines
And we generally handle payments via Paypal.

We are looking for someone who likes creating stability and efficiency in a cloud environment. Someone who is versatile at the shell to debug weird network issues, but who hates snowflakes. Someone who likes developing tools that are used by other developers, and makes their lives easier. Someone who masters our cloud.
Whilst it is possible to run completely “server less” these days, that isn’t always practical for all applications. Thus we still run a moderate cloud stack on the Google Cloud Platform. As you can see in the description of our stack, we use Hashicorp’s tools for deployment. That means a Consul + Vault cluster, and Nomad to schedule (container) jobs. That actually runs stable without too much maintenance. Most of the work is in improving the experience of other developers, and making it easier for them to do the things they need to do on the operations side.
For example, we use Terraform to control and set up our resources. However that doesn’t mean that it is clear for everyone what to use and how to tie that together. Modularizing and documenting is key here. Also, we want to enable continuous integration, so everyone can see what the effect would be of their changes, without giving everyone the proverbial keys to the kingdom.
The rest of the team will look at you for advice on how to deploy their service, how to keep sight on its metrics and errors. Note that whilst you are probably the one with the most knowledge, we do rotate on-call duties with the whole team.
**Compensation
**The envisioned salary range for this position is €55-80k per year (excluding 8% holiday pay), depending on experience. Besides that we offer Stock Appreciation Rights and a 4% learning budget. You’ll get an Apple Macbook Pro (M1 or M2) to work on.
Required skills
- You have experience managing a cloud platform (GCP/AWS/OpenStack) from code.
- You are proficient in Python (or another server-side language like Go or Ruby, and willing to learn Python).
- You can design a “stack” for a new service so it is scalable and trustworthy.
- You have experience with container based deployment.
- You are able to work with a erse group of people. You’re not a rock star or code-ninja, you’re a human, of some form 🙂.
- You can clearly outline your thoughts about a technical solution in written form (and diagrams are always a bonus!)
- You actively engage with others to optimize processes and reduce bottlenecks.
- You are able to pick up new things quickly.
- You want to work 32 to 40 hours a week.
Wishlist
- You have experience with Hashicorp’s Consul, Vault & Nomad.
- You have experience with Terraform.

We are a small team of talented developers, designers, and marketers. There’s our dev team of Ashley, George, James, and Daniel; our designer Lewis; and our marketers Caillie and Sam. I’m very proud to say that our company has been managing to delight thousands of customers, working from our homes since 2017.
We have big plans for the next 12 months and this is a great opportunity to join a small team of talented folks building an awesome product.

**
About You**You’re thrilled to work with the latest hotness tool, language or framework but also thrive working on a “fixer-upper” project. You respect old code, no matter how ugly it looks. You truly enjoy figuring out how old code works, refactoring it, and tackling the challenges that come with it. You have experience doing this type of work and know you love it.
You’re a problem solver who loves to analyze an issue, recreate it and track it back to the source of the problem. You won’t commit any code unless it’s fully tested and solves the problem. Better still, you write the tests to go with it.
You feel a profound sense of accomplishment after helping a customer resolve an issue that was frustrating them. You have a strong compulsion to help when people need it. It’s important to you that people get the best possible answer, not just a reply.
When you encounter something you’re not sure about, you stop, research, ask questions, and make sure, rather than giving it a best guess. The idea of sending incorrect information to a customer is mortifying and completely unacceptable to you.
You’re curious and love to learn. You embrace the opportunity to level up, learn something new and really dig into it. You’re a disciplined worker and have no trouble getting work done at home on any given day.
You value consistency above preference and will adopt new coding styles, standards, and tools to that end. You are stellar at identifying the simple, elegant solution in a sea of over-engineering possibilities.
Although you enjoy working with people to help you generate ideas and formulate a plan of attack on a project, you do your best work in isolation without interruption. You’re proactive in tackling things that need to be done without direction.
You’re exceptional at communicating in writing via direct message, email, etc. You’re ok on the phone and video chat too. You understand that clear, concise written communication is how remote teams thrive. People being confused by a message you’ve posted is extremely rare.
You own both successes and failures. When a project you’re leading turns into a disaster, you own it and you learn from it. You never point the finger at others.
You invite criticism and genuinely want to grow as a professional. You’re onboard with pushing each other to be better and are not afraid to give constructive criticism in addition to receiving it.
**
The Offer**- Remote First. We have always been a remote company, since the very start in 2012. Working from home has its challenges, but you’ll be surrounded by compassionate folks who have been successfully working from home for many years.
- Company Retreats. As a remote company, it’s super important to get some face time. We just had our first company retreat in a few years in San Diego, around WordCamp US 2022 and had a blast. Will you be joining us in 2023?
- Location Independent. Work from wherever you’re happiest. All members of our team currently work from their homes in Canada, the UK, the US, and Mexico.
- Choose Your Schedule. Most companies claim to have flexible hours, but the reality is often very different. We flex our hours for real 💪. As long as on average you’re working the number of hours you’ve committed to working each week, we’re good.
- Personal Development. If there’s a conference or event that will help you level up, the company will cover your expenses. You’re also allotted some time each month to learn something new unrelated to your job, participate in community discussions, and/or contribute to an open source project.
- Profit & Exit Sharing. I share a financial report with the team quarterly so everyone knows how the company is doing. And when the company does well, the team does well. When we sell the company, members of the team get a share of the proceeds based on their tenure.
- Company Holidays. Things get pretty quiet in late December / early January, so we always treat ourselves to a couple of weeks off to reboot during this time.
- Paid Leave. For the birth or adoption of a child, the company offers 8 weeks of 100% paid leave for primary caregivers and 3 weeks for secondary caregivers. We also offer 5 paid sick days and 3 days of paid bereavement leave.
- Health Insurance. Members of the team based in Canada are eligible for health/dental/life/disability insurance through the company’s Chambers of Commerce plan while those outside of Canada are eligible for a stipend to partially cover insurance costs.
- Competitive Salaries. The company typically pays salaries that are competitive with the market in which you reside. There are situations that call for higher pay even when living in a region with a lower cost of living, so we’re flexible on this.
**Apply
**I wrote this job posting like an informal message to you. Please reply to it in an email (no attachment letters please), introduce yourself, and let me know why you’re applying. Describe how you meet the Requirements, if you score any Bonus Points, if you’re the person I describe, and what’s on your resume that I ought not miss. Send your reply to [email protected].
We are an equal opportunity employer. Application information that is prone to unconscious biases is hidden during the review process whenever possible. We judge the content of the applications on their own without knowledge of the applicant’s race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, physical or mental disability, or age. We support workplace ersity, but not at the expense of equal opportunity and meritocracy. We’re looking for talented and empathetic people no matter their other attributes.
I look forward to reviewing your application.

**Hello,
****How are you?
****I'm sure you've read hundreds of these job descriptions by now.
****I hope reading this one will be less painful.
****In short: We are growing our product team and looking for a versatile DevOps & Platform Developer.
****We're looking for someone to join our current 2 DevOps developers and help us grow our platform and DevOps systems.
**What might that look like?
**You'll be helping our application - and our team - scale. Initially you'd be taking over the general maintenance and scaling of our server infrastructure. You'd collaborate with the Backend team on improvements to performance. Help us scale our databases. Evaluate implementing a multi-region deployment. Improve our local development experience for our developers. Assist with our SOC2, ISO 27001, and FedRAMP compliance. Help develop our internal platform for our team to use. A little bit of everything. You get to pick your own tools and we're always open to trying new things. You'd be the foundational member of our DevOps team and help it grow.
****What's our stack today?
****We use Google Cloud with their Kubernetes Engine for almost everything we do. Our backend applications are in a microservice architecture and are (almost) all PHP/Laravel applications. We utilized Google's hosted services for Postgres and Redis. All of the infrastructure itself is codified with Pulumi.

We are looking for someone help us running devops and internal tooling. We currently use Terraform to deploy our application to AWS ECS. We have a good setup currently, and we have loads of ideas for where to take it, but we don't have enough time to invest in it whilst continuing to develop our product. That's where you come in. You should be able to take our ideas for where to improve, bring your own ideas to the table, and scale up and manage our infrastructure and internal tooling, taking ownership of the problem.
We are a remote-first company, with no central office. We meet up for offsite retreats bi-annually, previously we have skied near Tahoe and tasted wine in Sonoma. Our Employee Handbook is published here: github.com/EnzymeCorp/handbook
Enzyme is a Y Combinator company (YC S17) with industry traction; we are growing our team to keep up with demand. This is an opportunity to be an early engineer at a startup that has found its feet and shape the engineering culture, and you should have opinions on how to do that.
If you enjoy working with smart and kind people, want to work for a company with a goal to improve peoples' lives, and want an opportunity to both grow with a company and shape that company's growth, we want to hear from you.
Must-haves:
- AWS Expertise
- Terraform expertise, or extremely strong expertise with similar infrastructure-as-code tooling and confidence to come up to speed with terraform quickly
- Ability to write and deploy internal-facing tooling such as self-serve infrastructure dashboards for setting up new environments, metrics etc, in a language that you are comfortable with
- Willingness to be on-call Monday-Friday 8am-6pm Pacific around 50% of the time, arranged flexibly, and the ability to design and manage an infrastructure such that needing to actually be called for an incident is rare!
Nice-to-haves:
- We use Ruby and Elixir, so knowledge of or interest in these would be helpful.
- Experience working within life science or another regulated industry.
- Experience working within a distributed team
- CISSP Certification and Security Experience

- You think that giving ownership to your mate is the best way to increase velocity inside a company
- Have solid knowledge of SQL, including the internals of Postgres: investigate slow queries, suggest index creation, optimise queries with backend devs
- You have a can do attitude, you won’t find reasons why something can’t be done, but find ways it can be done instead
- Experience developing in one or more general purpose programming or scripting languages, including but not limited to GoLang, Python, and JavaScript
What will you do?
- Create and maintain services to ensure velocity and ownership of your team mates

Studies have shown that women are less likely to apply to roles in Tech, which is why we strongly encourage you to apply even if you don't feel you match 100% of the job specifications!
Hello,
How are you?
I'm sure you've read hundreds of these job descriptions by now.
I hope reading this one will be less painful.
In short: We are growing our product team and looking for a versatile DevOps & Platform Developer.
We're looking for someone to join our current 2 DevOps developers and help us grow our platform and DevOps systems.
What might that look like?
You'll be helping our application - and our team - scale.
What's our stack today?
We use Google Cloud with their Kubernetes Engine for almost everything we do. Our backend applications are in a microservice architecture and are (almost) all PHP/Laravel applications. We utilized Google's hosted services for Postgres and Redis. All of the infrastructure itself is codified with Pulumi.
**Does that sound interesting? Would you enjoy that role?
**If so, please apply. I'd love to talk.

Role:
We’re looking for a Digital Project Manager & HubSpot Specialist who will work directly with clients and be their main point of contact and communicate with assertiveness and care both internally and with our clients. Manage projects by working with various departments to achieve results, and go above and beyond for our clients. Expand your HubSpot knowledge and practice by performing certain actions in HubSpot on behalf of our clients.
Responsibilities:
- Work on “behind-the-scenes” client tasks like building emails, workflows, blogs, etc.
- Work with internal teams as needed (for example, project managers to ensure projects stay on track, content team for writing email workflows, or our back-end engineers for data migrations or complex integrations).
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee projects with a wide variety of tasks, work with cross-functional teams and ensure all targets and requirements are met and completed on schedule and within budget. Managing scope creep is your responsibility.
- Communicate regularly with the client regarding project scope and proactively yet kindly manage client expectations about what is included in the scope and what is not.
- Be our clients' primary point of contact and engage them in (8-10) live training sessions per week to ensure they get the most out of HubSpot.
- Own multiple projects concurrently.
- Projects you will be managing include website projects (from onboarding and goal setting to wireframing, copy, design, HubSpot implementation, QA, and launch), marketing campaigns (including graphic design, ads, SEO), complex integration work, and more. This means you will manage the internal resources and keep things on track, it doesn’t mean being an expert in all these fields.
- Proactively develop, implement, and monitor new and/or existing processes that improve cross-functional alignment, effectiveness, and decision-making.
- Create handbooks for our clients
- HubMasters Program: Play a major role in this program's function, communication with clients, running live group sessions, etc.

- Client satisfaction is high on all your projects
- Our SOP & Process database grows with your assistance

- Strong client management skills with an assertive yet empathic presence.
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment while being able to manage and prioritize changing deadlines.

- Work with a highly supportive, accepting, and inclusive founding team.
Our Hiring Process:

Note that you are probably the one with the most knowledge, we do rotate on-call duties with the whole team.
**Compensation
**The envisioned salary range for this position is €55-80k per year (excluding 8% holiday pay), depending on experience. Besides that we offer Stock Appreciation Rights and a 4% learning budget. You’ll get an Apple Macbook Pro (M1 or M2!) to work on.
