Protect Democracy seeks a highly motivated inidual to join our team as a Paralegal/Impact Associate.

As a Paralegal/Impact Associate, you will primarily provide support to litigation and legal advocacy projects, while at the same time have the opportunity to contribute to impact projects using other tools, spanning policy reform and advocacy, strategic communications, research, and data analysis. For this role, prior paralegal experience and/or litigation support skills are required. This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate who wishes to hone your skills in all stages of litigation, case management, writing and research, and communications, and over time develop expertise in one or more areas of our work.

Paralegal/Impact Associate responsibilities include:

  • Support litigation by contributing to the preparation of legal memos and pleadings, coordinating and conducting court filings, and assisting with the discovery process
  • Conduct research, synthesize findings, and draft related memoranda, reports, and other communications
  • Cite-check, fact-check, Bluebook, proofread, and assist with drafting court filings, letters, and other public-facing documents
  • Support the team’s engagement with clients, opposing counsel, partner organizations and other external stakeholders
  • Assist in drafting and publishing external-facing communications materials, including press releases, tweets, talking points, outreach emails, op-eds, and blog posts
  • Assist in managing litigation projects and workstreams, including developing work plans and tracking and communicating progress towards goals
  • Manage and coordinate projects, developing work plans and tracking and communicating progress towards goals
  • Strategize with other team members and actively contribute ideas during impact and litigation project brainstorming sessions
  • Propose new impact projects to advance Protect Democracy’s mission

Job requirements

The ideal candidate brings:

  • At least one year of professional work experience
  • Prior paralegal experience, preferably supporting litigation, or litigation support skills, such as filing documents in court; cite checking and Bluebooking documents; drafting and issuing discovery requests; case management, litigation administration, and managing large quantities of documents; and navigating court rules
  • Strong writing, researching, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Project management experience and the ability to manage up, down, and sideways
  • Nimbleness and an ability to perform well in a rapid-paced environment
  • Willingness to learn new research, communications, legal and policy skills and processes
  • Ability to foster collaborative relationships and work in a team environment with people with erse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives
  • Rigorous attention to detail and the highest standards for excellence in execution
  • Ability to track, prioritize, and balance a erse set of responsibilities
  • Growth mindset and enthusiasm for giving and receiving feedback up, down and sideways
  • Passion for protecting and improving our democracy

Compensation

The starting salary range for this role is $58,916 to $64,528, commensurate with the candidate’s relevant experience, capabilities and skills and in alignment with internal equity.

About Protect Democracy

  • Flexible location. You can work from any location in the United States as long as your location allows you to complete the demands of the position and mission. All staff are required to travel at least two times per year to internal team retreats. (Accommodations to this requirement will be made only in exceptional circumstances.) We currently have staff in Washington, DC, New York, Massachusetts, California, Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Utah, Michigan, Georgia, Washington, and elsewhere around the country. We offer shared workspaces in many of these locations for staff members who enjoy working in an office environment.
