The Mellon Foundation believes human possibility thrives within just communities. We make grants to actively support the visionaries who unlock the power in the arts and humanities to bring forward the multivocal stories and expressions that connect us all. To this end, we make grants in four core program areas (Higher Learning, Arts and Culture, Public Knowledge, and Humanities in Place).

Position Summary

The Foundation seeks a front-end developer to imagine and implement digital projects that bring our mission to life in new ways, and who will work closely as part of a multidisciplinary team to drive the continued digital evolution of the Foundation.

Reporting to the IT Solutions Architect, with a dotted line to the Chief Communications Officer, the front-end developer is a member of both the IT services and Communications teams, and partners with colleagues across IT, visual designers, digital content producers and strategists, and other Foundation stakeholders to conceive, develop, and execute top-flight digital projects, which are part of a broader vision to illustrate grantees’ impact on social justice issues, to invite audiences to engage with the world-changing power of the arts and humanities via Mellon’s content, and to advance a more fair and just society.

This role will also be significantly involved in shaping Mellon’s new flagship website as a destination for vital storytelling about the fields and issues in which the Foundation is invested.

The position requires deep appreciation for design and development of content-rich digital products combined with tactical knowledge, including accessibility and privacy considerations for public websites. The successful candidate is a creative thinker, expert in user interface with a strong portfolio of work across web and mobile that demonstrates responsive design that is also pixel perfect.

Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with colleagues in Communications, develop and deliver content-rich user experiences that extend Mellon’s storytelling into the digital medium in compelling, creative, and beautiful ways:

    • Develop pages and applications for mellon.org and other internal and external Mellon properties;

    • Develop digital experiences that support Mellon’s storytelling (like interactive content and graphics) ;

    • Create email marketing templates and special-use pages as required by the Foundation’s engagement strategy.

  • Produce high-quality, scalable, and reusable code following best practices and Mellon’s internal standards.

  • Work in close collaboration with creative teams to translate content and brand strategy into innovative interactive experiences.

  • Contribute digital thought leadership to the content strategy and tactical discussion of user experience advancements.

  • Gather and refine specifications and requirements based on technical requirements or UX/UI design.

  • Debug errors, troubleshoot issues, and perform routine performance optimizations.

  • Ensure on-site search engine optimization (SEO) of code and metadata.

  • Work with back-end developers to integrate UI components with APIs and databases.

  • Remain current in, and provide counsel regarding, emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related discipline with a focus on user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design and development.

  • 5+ years of experience developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining sites and digital products in a fast-paced environment.

  • 2+ years of experience consuming content from headless CMS platforms (Contentful experience a plus).

  • Portfolio of work demonstrating pixel-perfect code, translating user-centered designs and specifications into websites or products.

  • Deep appreciation for design-led digital products.

  • Proficiency in the software development life cycle, version control, and utilizing hosted code repositories (GitHub preferred).

  • Proficiency with HTML5, including semantic HTML5 elements, microformats, and Web Accessibility Initiative - Accessible Rich Internet Applications (WAI-ARIA).

  • Conversant with the Document Object Model (DOM) and comfortable manipulating browser-side user experience with JavaScript, HTML, CSS.

  • Thorough understanding of responsive design principles, with the ability to deliver products and sites that maintain consistent UX across platforms, viewports, and browsers.

  • Expert with the React JavaScript framework, including Next.JS and Typescript.

  • Working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop.

  • Some experience working in cloud-hosted environments like AWS and Azure.

  • Exposure to Kotlin/Java, Spring Boot, GraphQL, Netlify, or similar back-end technologies.

  • High attention to detail with the ability to deliver sustained excellence.

  • Outstanding troubleshooting and debugging skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Enjoys engaging and working with closely knit teams

  • Experience working in a not-for-profit environment a plus.

Mellon Foundation is committed to providing compensation that is competitive and equitable within the philanthropic sector. The estimated salary range for this role is $130,000-$150,000. The amount of pay offered will be determined by a number of factors, including but not limited to qualifications, unique skills, credentials or experience that is expected to impact the candidate’s contribution to the role. We will also consider market data as well as the Foundation’s internal pay equity framework. Mellon offers a generous total reward package that provides base salary as well as a comprehensive benefits program.
