A little background on Earnest: We're a remote first FinTech company with an accomplished team who believe consumer lending can be radically improved and are doing something about it. We are disrupting the trillion dollar student loan industry by redefining what it means to be creditworthy. We created a company that combines data science, streamlined design, and technology to:

  • Personalize loans to suit the needs of our customers
  • Engage with our customers through more human experiences

What makes an “Earnie” culture:

Earnest’s culture is as dynamic as the products we’re building and defining every day. We’re a fast-growing company, and that means we’re constantly integrating the new perspectives of every inidual.

Earnies define our culture as:

  • Earn Happy Customers
    • Our success comes from anticipating their needs and providing the solutions they’re looking for.
  • Better is Better
    • The path to great means getting better every day. We push ourselves, and each other, to remain curious and think differently.
  •  PhD in Moving Fast
    • Our customers are tired of long wait times and large student loan bills so we constantly seek out ways to deliver faster.
  •  Passion for Challenges
    • Perseverance and optimism are just the start to take on the inertia of a national trillion-dollar problem.
  •  Impact is a Team Sport
    • We maximize our impact when we act as one team.

Our Earnie's are fun, innovative, and willing to rollup their sleeves to help their team succeed in a fast-paced environment. If this sounds like you, and you want to join us on our mission to radically disrupt a trillion dollar fintech industry, keep reading to find out how.

As a Product Designer you are responsible for assisting with a range of product tasks, including: designing features (in low- and high-fidelity), running UX tests / user interviews, writing out product specs, running UAT (checking that features are built to spec), and ensuring good product documentation. This person will collaborate closely with engineering and other cross-functional groups as needed to deliver value for Going Merry & Earnest.

You will work on the following:

  • Research & Design product features
    • Ideate new product features, tests, and improvements.
    • Work collaboratively to prioritize feature ideas.
    • Flesh out feature concepts into low-fidelity mockups (Balsamiq) and high-fidelity designs (Figma)
    • Use research and data to inform and implement solutions/improvements - This involves both quantitative research (e.g. looking at data) and qualitative data (e.g. surveys, user interviews, feedback from front-line Customer Service or Sales teams)

  • Project management / Execution
    • Ensure Jira tickets have clear and full specs, including links to mockups, screenshots, and Loom video walk-throughs.
Work collaboratively with QA and Engineering to ensure the finished product meets design specifications (User Acceptance Testing)
  • Customer Service & Data monitoring
    • Monitor Customer Service channels for any potential bugs/issues, raise them to QA/engineers and the Head of Product, and ensure follow-through/resolutions.
    • Partner with CS to see what common “user errors” there are and how we might be able to make product design improvements to make these less common /less frustrating for the user.
    • Regularly track key actions/funnels to ensure smooth performance (no huge dropoff that might indicate a bug or major design failing)

  • Product documentation
    • Following a release into Production, document what has changed and communicate that to the Operations, Customer Support, and Sales teams. Ensure there is a single source of (updated) truth for everyone.
    • Help with historical documentation, to fill gaps on what has not been documented previously

Ideal background and expertise:

  • 3+ years prior experience in product management, product/UX/UI design, or technical project management
  • Some experience using wireframing or design tools (we use Balsamiq and Figma)
  • Some experience with Jira and/or other product management software
  • High attention to detail
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Experience (or interest in) primarily asynchronous work
  • A good understanding of the tech development process
