Principal UX Designer

In this role, you’ll kick off new product initiatives, do initial discovery and scoping, and set the team up for success. You’ll get struggling projects back on track by coaching, critiquing, and providing design leadership. You’ll help mature our UX practice by building better processes, training, and accountability.

What you can do for Expel

  • Collaborate with PM and SMEs on discovery, workshops, interviews, and research for new product ideas, and help frame and scope the user problems we’re solving and how we’re going to solve them.
  • Create clarity and forward momentum for projects that need UX leadership. This might mean running a workshop, doing design reviews, helping prioritize the work, scoping things down, communicating up and across, identifying resourcing needs, or getting stakeholders aligned.
  • Coach teams in using the Lean UX approach to develop hypotheses, test them quickly, and measure outcomes.
  • Keep an eye on R&D initiatives before they hit the product team and provide a UX perspective while we’re making back-end architecture and database decisions.
  • Help mentor, coach, and critique.
  • Work with UX team leadership to mature our practice.

What you should bring with you

  • Deep experience in enterprise UX, technical users, interaction design, and information architecture. Familiarity with service design and growth design is a plus.
  • Ability to step into a complicated project situation, quickly understand the problem space and the forces at work, and build alignment around a design strategy and approach.
  • Effective and polished communication at different levels high-level strategy for leadership, cross-functional strategy and planning, and command of the details at the project level.
  • Extensive experience crafting and running design workshops, kickoff meetings, stakeholder alignment sessions, and user research projects.
  • Strong project management and prioritization skills.
  • Growth mindset, resilience, patience, and a sense of humor.

Education and experience

You’ve served in UX technical leadership or managerial roles for a number of years. Experience in cybersecurity is extremely helpful, but not a deal-breaker if you don’t have it.

Work location

Can be 100% remote in mainland US timezones.

Additional notes

The base salary range for this role is between $138,800 USD and $201,300 USD + bonus eligibility and equity.

We believe in paying transparently and equitably. Your salary will ultimately be based on factors such as your experience, skills, team equity, and market data. You’ll also be eligible for unlimited PTO (which we model and encourage), work location flexibility, up to 24 weeks of parental leave, and really excellent health benefits.
