Hello UX Designers,

We are always working hard to support our partners; we may not have a project ready for kick-off right now, but if you are interested in being a part of Code 4 Canada in the future, when a new project starts. Please apply, and we will be in contact if you meet the requirements.

In the meantime, thank you for following and wanting to be a part of Code 4 Canada. Below are general details about being a UX Designer at Code 4 Canada.

Code for Canada

Code for Canada is a national nonprofit that enables governments to deliver better digital services and empowers communities to solve civic challenges. We connect residents, government innovators and civic technologists, so they can work together to build a better nation.

As part of our mission, we form cross-functional product teams made up of product managers, UX designers and developers and embed them in government projects. Not only are these collaborators helping build products and services, but they're also tasked with building digital capacity among their government partners.

What you'll do

You'll be part of a small cross-functional team (one developer, one designer, and one PM) to build a digital product that addresses a public service need.

As a team, you'll be responsible for all aspects of the product development process, and will coordinate closely with internal IT teams to ensure that the product is well-positioned for long-term sustainment after the completion of your contract.

You'll work shoulder to shoulder with public servants who are subject matter experts, both learning from them about their domain, and helping them understand the approaches, tools, and processes of digital teams.

The details

  • Job type: full-time, fixed-term. The term will differ based on project length.
  • Target start date: TBC- Candidates must pass the government security clearance process before a start date can be confirmed. (Approx. The clearance time process, on average  ten weeks once an investigator is assigned to your case; it could be longer)
  • Salary range: Will vary based on seniority
  • Location: anywhere in Canada
  • Note: Although a remote position, proof of vaccination against COVID-19 is required.

Who we're looking for

Required

  • Confident in leading your team and external stakeholders through design processes
  • Confident in your primary research, including the field of studies, interviews, diary studies, participation workshops, ethnography, surveys, usability testing, and logs analysis.
  • Having conducted independent research for previous projects alone on multiple aspects of products and experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, gain buy-in for, and execute both generative and usability design research
  • Proven ability to generate design materials, including user requirements, storyboards, flowcharts, high fidelity design prototypes, and wireframes
  • Demonstrated knowledge about inclusive and accessible design, and ability to design experiences that work for everyone from the start
  • Ability to work closely with product managers to ensure that design research insights are translated to product strategy

Preferred, but not required

  • Additional experience in digital delivery roles outside of the skillset through which you are applying
  • Experience mentoring or teaching people without technical experience
  • Community organizing, non-profit, government, and policy experience
  • Professional fluency in French

How to apply

If you meet 80% or more of what we're looking for, please apply!

Please don't write a lengthy cover letter. We welcome a brief resume (max two pages, one is great!), and answers to a few questions. Please provide a link to your design portfolio.

Code for Canada is an equal opportunity employer, and we do not discriminate based on citizenship, race, place of origin, ethnic origin, colour, ancestry, disability, age, creed, sex/pregnancy, family status, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or record of offences.

We will gladly provide accommodations to candidates with disabilities during the application process.

Please don't stress if you haven't heard from us and it's been a while; it just means we don't have an open project that matches.
