We're a Health & Fitness YouTube channel (52k subs) looking for a fantastic thumbnail designer.

We aim to produce 1 video every 2 weeks.

Deadline: Feb 15, 2023

About the job

Establish Brand vibe

We’re changing our channel brand in two ways:

  • 1. Instead of being hyper-focused on weight loss, it will be about Health, Productivity, and Life Improvement as a whole, with weight loss woven into each video as fits.

    • Think: bring the production and storytelling of the productivity niche to weight loss.
  • 2. Change the look and feel from the banner, thumbnails, in-video graphics, pacing and vibe to the clean, clear, minimal and gender-neutral vibe seen in some productivity channels like Nathaniel Drew, Matt D’Avella, and Ali Abdaal.

You will work with Richa (one of the co-founders and the protagonist in the videos) to translate this targeted vibe into a brand aesthetic (banner, palette).

We will be pivoting to this new aesthetic as soon as we have it established.

Produce new thumbnails

You will own and drive this process:

  • 1. Idea generation.

    • This will require you to stay up to date with current trends/best practices within the thumbnail space while balancing these ideas with the established brand vibe we are targeting.
  • 2. Coordinate with production team to capture assets necessary for thumbnail.

    • This includes everything from framing, facial expressions, content of the photos, and anything else necessary to make the thumbnail highly clickable.
  • 3. Iterate on steps 1-2 rapidly to produce 2-3 high-confidence thumbnails per video.

    • No more than 24h turnaround time to produce variations addressing last feedback.

    • You will need to be able to stand your ground and raise concerns when you feel suggestions contradict the brand vibe and/or clickability. You cannot outsource your judgment and fall into “I will do whatever you tell me” mode.

  • 4. Track performance of published thumbnail in real-time and switch thumbnails if you sense one of the other backup thumbnails from step 3 will attract more viewers.

    • This requires know-how of YouTube analytics, baselines, and an understanding of how to interpret data.

Revive old videos

You will own and drive the process of:

  • 1. Identifying which videos are worth reviving through change in title and/or thumbnail.

  • 2. Do steps 1-3 from “Produce new thumbnails” section for the identified videos.

  • 3. Run A|B tests in TubeBuddy and track their performance.

  • 4. Repeat steps 1-3 until either video takes off or is reevaluated to not be worth reviving.

Ideal Candidate

  • A lover of YouTube.

  • Has produced 30+ YouTube thumbnails in past year.

  • Enjoys the clean, clear, minimal style of Cajun Koi Academy, Samuel Suresh, Matt D’Avella, etc.

  • Knowledge of lighting, camera, etc. to be able to collaborate with the photographer to capture good thumbnail assets.

  • Excellent Photoshop skills.

  • Hunger and strong urgency to prove you can grow viewership by 10-50x by producing highly clickable thumbnails.

  • Wants to go through courses on producing great thumbnails and executing data-driven tests on YouTube, and applying them in context of our channel.

  • Not afraid to ask questions and raise concerns.

  • Refuses to stop thinking and raising concerns no matter how long the iteration process goes.

  • Produces variations within 24h.

  • Knows how to read and interpret YouTube data.

  • Knows how to create good data-driven experiments.

  • Excellent communicator in async working environment.
