Job Summary

Reporting to the Head of Software Development and Library Systems, the Visual Designer participates in the full life cycle of UX design (including research, synthesis, design, and testing) for all sites and applications developed or administered by the UCLA Library. Complementing the Lead UX Designer, the Visual Designer translates insights from UX research into visual assets that speak to users, stakeholders, and developers alike by bringing domain experience in graphic design, cultural heritage, and technical teams.

The Visual Designer creates usable, accessible, and meaningful interfaces for Library products by applying and evolving the Library’s newly developed design system. This position brings innovation to the field of visual representation for library materials in the digital realm, and improves the visual interfaces of Library web properties with best practices and creativity. In collaboration with the Lead UX Designer, this position advances and supports the Library’s UX Strategic Plan with visual design by demonstrating both quantifiable and qualitative value of user-centered services.

The Visual Designer is a member of the Software Development & Library Systems (SDLS) unit. The SDLS unit is comprised of 10 Software Developers, 3 Sysadmins, and 2 UX Designers, who are grouped into three development sub-teams: 1) the Applications Team, which builds end-user applications, 2) the Services Team, which builds backend services and APIs used by internal and external applications; 3) the Systems Team, which manages COTS systems and builds internal applications and integrations. In addition to the three development sub-teams, SDLS also includes the Dev Support Team (systems administrators) and the UX Team. Members from those two groups are embedded in the three development teams. The Visual Designer is a member of the UX Team.

The unit follows a Kanban method of Agile development, wherein each sub-team meets weekly for backlog grooming and the entire unit meets for daily standups and monthly retrospectives. The unit strives for a DevOps culture of collaboration, feedback & improvement, and continual learning. Evidence of this culture includes: stakeholders participating in backlog grooming and standups, regular monitoring of retrospective action items, and isolated time on Mondays for learning and experimentation. The team also embraces a remote-first culture, with permanently remote members across 4 time zones, and several more who work remotely 1-3 days per week.

The Software Development & Library Systems unit is part of the Digital Initiatives and Information Technology (DIIT) department, which is comprised of over 50 staff members in five functional units: 1) the Software Development Team, as described above, 2) the Core Ops Team, which supports the network and manages the servers and storage in the datacenter, 3) the Core Services Team which provides IT hardware support and enterprise application support to Library staff and lends laptops and other hardware to students, 4) the Data Science Center which provides training, consultation, and a data repository for campus researchers, and 5) the Digital Library Program which works with partners, both internal to UCLA and across the globe, to execute projects that digitize, describe, and publish archival materials.

Job Functions & Duties

A. User Experience Research & Design (60%)

• Conducts user research methods as directed (e.g. surveys, analytics, interviews, etc.).

We're a language learning app that will completely change the way people learn languages. We're making a language learning app that is truly fun and addictive. It’s not simply “a gamified app”, it’s an actual game. A game that has been designed from the ground up to also be the most effective language learning system that’s ever existed. Other apps can be effective, but often are not truly fun and are very difficult to use consistently. Hence users rely on forcing themselves to use them.

Position Overview

Daily Harvest is looking for a Product Designer II to join our Digital Product team. The Digital Product team develops experiences and tools that delight our customers and fuel growth. As a Product Designer II, you will play a critical role in bringing our product and brand vision to life in our iOS app and on the web. In this role, you will create useful, educational, and inspirational experiences that will enhance our customer’s interactions with Daily Harvest.

You should be a strategic thinker with a genuine desire to keep up with the latest visual design trends, prototyping tools, and design frameworks. You are curious and want to understand our customers on a deep level, finding solutions to complex interactions, user experience, and design problems. Working closely with the product and engineering functions, you’ll enhance the customer-driven mindset across the company to elevate our level of product design and achieve our larger company goals.

What you’ll do:

• Work with a cross-functional team throughout the entire product development cycle: from concept development to execution to launch, advocating for our users and our brand along the way
• Support our product development process with design thinking, sketching, prototyping, testing, learning, polished execution, and iteration
• Gather research, create prototypes, and iterate towards winning solutions while collaborating with a cross-functional team
• Find innovative ways to balance utility, education, and inspiration throughout our app and web digital experience
• Take an active and involved role in the definition of our product strategy for both new and existing functionality
• Partner with engineers to ensure a high-level of polish throughout the development cycle
• Partner with our brand and creative team to refine and evolve our design system to enable efficient, consistent, and scalable product development

Who you are:

• 5+ years in a digitally-focused design role
• The right candidate will have a strong grasp of UX design, HCI principles and visual design with the ability to take a product from a flow diagram, through prototyping, to a pixel-perfect high-fidelity live user experience
• Mastery of industry standard design software, curiosity to experiment with emerging tools
• A track record of building exceptional and engaging user experiences for both apps and the web, ideally for e-commerce brands
• You love product and branding and how they are intertwined
• You obsess over details, but don’t lose sight of the bigger picture
• Informed and excited about design systems and design standards
• Rapid prototyping skills. You have multiple tools in your tool belt for getting customer feedback early and often in your design process.

The anticipated annual base salary range for this role is $10,000 – $145,000. Actual compensation will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, knowledge, and skills.

Winston-Salem, NC Remote Position

The UX/UI Creative Director will lead user experience strategy and design for web design and app projects, leverage data to make decisions, and exhibit passion for solving real problems for real people. This role is expected to lead the design vision, strategies, and execution of the design deliverables and ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget. This leader will have a solid knowledge of the latest technologies and design trends and be held responsible for creating, shaping, and improving team processes and deliverables. This role will also collaborate with other agency teams to support and aid Account Management in managing client relationships.

The UX/UI Creative Director will be expected to be a self-starter and an author of creative solutions with an ability to collaborate and humanize complicated ideas through design. We are also looking for someone with experience in all facets of user experience from user research and interviews to high-end prototype builds, as well as experience directing UX/UI design.

The UX/UI Creative Director will work in partnership with designers to ensure that the foundation of each website project is optimized for user experience, and execution of design work aligns with overall business and strategic goals.

Responsibilities

• Lead comprehensive user experience and design strategy across both client projects and the agency as a whole

• Manage UX & UI training & development across the team to support key projects

• Direct creation of user flows, annotated wireframes, and clickable prototypes which enable developers to build websites that embrace great user experience

• Determine the direction of user experience research and usability studies

• Ability to create persona and journey documents

• Review UX/UI designers’ deliverables and provide necessary feedback

• Collaborate with designers and developers to ensure a final product is as user-friendly as possible

• Stay abreast of new and innovative trends in the information architecture discipline

• Support in resourcing conversations and decision making

• Support in the creation and editing of SOWs for new business

• Manage client relationships, when applicable

• Integrate with the overall team on testing and optimization of user experience

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience working in the UX discipline and leading a UX team

• Strong understanding of design, usability, and research best practices

• Experience flexing between design strategy and planning and design execution

• Experience designing complex, data-intensive applications

• Experience designing for mobile/tablet

• Experience creating a pattern library or design system

• Proficiency in common wireframing tools

• Great communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills

• Significant real-world experience designing real products or custom responsive websites at large scale

• Excellent strategic thinking and problem solving skills

• Passion for continuous learning in usability principles and techniques

• Skilled at rapid prototyping in Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, on cocktail napkins and whiteboards

• Strong collaborator

• A strong portfolio of successful projects with distinctive user experiences and research/personas/journeys as well as wireframes

• Experience with responsive design across multiple device types and contexts

• Knowledge of front-end development technologies and a solid understanding of  HTML, CSS
