Alexa News keeps customers informed about the world around them by seamlessly integrating the news they want most into their everyday lives. We build news experiences across multiple devices, including the Echo Family, Fire TV, and Fire Tablet. These experiences touch every aspect of news, from lean-back (Alexa, what’s the news?) to specific questions (Alexa, what’s the latest with the election?). As a QAE in the team, you will work closely with business and development teams and your responsibilities will include test planning (writing test plans and test cases), test execution (manual) and automation (automating test case ). You will across the full stack of the product including front-end as well as back-end and will be responsible for certifying the product for release. As a QAE, you would need to understand software internals and debug problems using log files so as to be able to identify the right team/software component that needs to fix the issue.

A day in the life

As a Quality Assurance Engineer on the team, you’ll be responsible for defining the test strategy and test plans for Alexa News products, reviewing them with stakeholders, and execute tests through manual or automated testing approaches. You work with SDEs to improve the automated testing infrastructure by enhancing automated test coverage, building testing utilities and generating QA metrics. You coordinate with AIQ (Alexa International Quality) team to extend the test coverage across new and existing locales. You should have a strong sense of ownership, pushing for QA best practices and operational excellence, with a constant desire to learn and improve.

What you will be doing:

Core Responsibilities

• The role will involve supporting the QA Manager in testing activities for the covert operations management solution, known as Charter, including new features, incident remediation and BAU testing.

We are looking for a Quality Assurance (QA) engineer to develop and execute exploratory and automated tests to ensure product quality.

As a QA Analyst at Defiant you will be required to:

• Find new bugs in a web application, WordPress plugin or back-end application, or system.
• Discover the steps to reproduce a bug.
• Document the steps in a well-written bug report which you will file.
• Reproduce bugs reported by a customer or reported to you by our customer service team. This may require some research on your part, working with the CS team to understand what the customer reported, and finding out how to reproduce the issue.
• Verify fixes that have been implemented by the dev team and deployed to our staging environment. If you discover an issue, you'll assign the issue back to the dev team. If you verify the fix, you can mark it verified and move on, until the application or system is ready to be deployed to production.

Figuring Out What to Test and Testing Broadly

One of the skills that we value highly in great QA analysts is the ability to test broadly. What we mean by this is, rather than testing the minimum requirements when verifying a bug, we expect our analysts to come up with creative tests that may reveal problems in new code. This requires anticipating ways that a fix may affect other parts of an application or data.

Specific skills and activities that help with our approach of "testing broadly" are:

• Looking at the PHP code in a pull request, that a developer has implemented, to understand what changed, and get an idea of what else a code change may break, then testing those parts of a system.
• Using a SQL client to access the database that an application is interacting with and looking at the table structure and data. Understanding how a developer's code changes the data, and coming up with new tests, using this knowledge, that may reveal a bug.
• Looking at server error logs to determine if a test is failing silently, or creating output in the error log that may reveal a new area that can be tested to identify a bug.
• Look at the Javascript browser console to find errors that code may be silently generating, that could reveal a bug or other potential problem.

• Knowledge of Unix commands, Tomcat web server

The Role: 

We are looking for iniduals who are interested in working in the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning industry. We are looking for a candidate who is a self-starter, detail-oriented and has good personal organizational skills. What You'll Do:

• Cooperate with the Research ML/Engineering/PM teams to understand the use cases
• Find and collect necessary audio or text files to ensure appropriate test coverage 
• Organize, label and classify test datasets 
• Define test flow and perform tests based on it
• Conduct manual error analysis and report common errors, bugs
• Conduct objective evaluations and report results 
• Emphasis on obtained results via reporting and visualization
• Follow up on issues reported by users
• Conduct appropriate documentation

What We’re Looking For:

• BS/MS degree in CS or related field 
• Experience as a QA Engineer with at least for 2+ years
• Automation testing experience with non-GUI,command-line applications
• Experience in scripting languages (Ex. Python, bash/csh etc.) 
• Experience in testing applications in at least one of the following platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux or Web
• Solid understanding of quality assurance techniques, testing concepts, methodologies, and tools
• Analytical skills with the ability to investigate and research multiple sources
• Good communication skills
• As an advantage will be considered:
  • Experience with Python libs such as pytest, numpy, scipy, etc
  • Experience in working with audio, video or text data 
  • Experience in application performance testing

Day-to-Day

• Create detailed, comprehensive and well-structured test plans and test cases.
• Audit and update existing test cases if needed.
• Execute regression and exploratory testing.
• Write bug reports and update issues in appropriate tracking tools

Qualifications 

• 2-3 years of experience in QA, especially with the manual testing of web-based applications.
• Attention to detail and quality orientation.
• Experience with the creation/maintenance of test documentation.
• Strong knowledge of software QA methodologies, processes, and tools.
• A clear understanding of the software development lifecycle, including the quality assurance process.
• Experience in Asana, GitHub and Qase.io (or similar) systems.
• Strong communication skills.
• In-depth knowledge of the current industry-wide testing techniques, tools, and methodologies.
• Advanced English knowledge.
• Ability to work full time.

We are looking to hire our first QA Engineer to analyze, develop, design, and maintain test cases for the organization’s products and systems. This role will be a key part of a team helping to coordinate manual and automated testing needs. 

How You’ll Fulfill Your Mission

• Design, develop, and maintain manual & automated browser, mobile and API test scripts.

• Ensures proper execution of test procedures and automated test suites and scripts.

• Understand business requirements and come up with a test strategy to do different types of required testing and requirement traceability.

• Work with both the Product Owner and development team to understand QA needs and develop QA Test Plan accordingly.

• Work with team members from QA, DevOps, and Developers for implementation & deployment.

• Establishes strong working relationships with team members and cross-functional teams. Cross BU collaboration and release planning.

• Follow established Agile process and QA best practices, processes, and guidelines for high-quality releases.

• Execute various testing activities such as Acceptance, Regression, System, Functional, Integration, and some level of Performance testing.

• Provides accurate problem identification, root cause analysis, ticket documentation, and resolution.

• Identify dependencies and risks/concerns with testing activities or release schedule. Plan for end-to-end system testing cycles in the physical lab.

• Automating the regression and smoke tests using Javascript-based frameworks like Jest, Cypress, Nightwatch, etc.

• Lead and manage QA related project tasks
