Your Mission:

As a QA Engineer, you are going to be a crucial part of our quality assurance initiatives. You’re going to participate in internal testing activities; work in conjunction with functional teams and product teams during the development of new features; assure the product meets quality standards; and ensure that the product gets delivered in a timely manner.

Responsibilities:

• • Review requirements, specifications, and technical design documents to provide timely and meaningful feedback
  • Create detailed, comprehensive, and well-structured test plans and test cases
  • Estimate, prioritize, plan and coordinate testing activities
  • Design, develop and execute automation scripts using open source tools
  • Identify, record, document thoroughly, and track bugs
  • Perform thorough regression testing when bugs are resolved
  • Liaise with internal teams (e.g. developers and product managers) to identify system requirements
  • Monitor debugging process results
  • Investigate the causes of non-conforming software and train users to implement solutions
  • Track quality assurance metrics, like defect densities and open defect counts
  • Stay up-to-date with new testing tools and test strategies

The Quality Assurance Engineer is responsible for the planning, execution and reporting of test results on all products developed in Product Engineering. A QA Engineer will be able to be given direction and work independently, providing updates to their manager on a timely basis. A QA Engineer is expected to have basic knowledge on at least one product and will be able to assist on other products as needed. In addition, they will perform feature, regression and system level testing as well as assist in the development of processes and procedures related to product development.

Your Impact

• Own the testing strategy for existing and new products
• Develop detailed, comprehensive and well-structured test plans and test cases
• Perform multiple types of black-box, white-box, and grey-box testing including functional, system, end to end, load testing, performance testing, data integrity, smoke, regression, and ad hoc testing
• Estimate, prioritize, plan and coordinate testing activities
• Work closely with product teams to ensure alignment
• Submit comprehensive defects using our bug tracking system
• Regress and verify defects as needed, record test results, and provide metrics

Requirements

• 2+ years proven work experience in Software Engineering, Test, Quality Assurance, or Deployment
• BS degree or equivalent work experience in Computer Science or related field
• Strong experience with modern languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Golang, etc.
• Strong experience with open-source test frameworks, including CypressJS or Selenium/WebDriver
• Strong experience with build automation technologies like Jenkins, CircleCI, GitHub Actions, etc.
• Experience with AWS, Docker, or Terraform a definite plus
• Experience with Agile-Scrum and other Agile methodologies
• Experience with load testing tools
• Excellent analytical skills to work with developers for troubleshooting and peer review
• Effective written and verbal communications skills

The role Director of Quality and Food Safety will play a critical role in delivering BARK’s mission of making the world a better place for all dogs and all families, ensuring that all of BARK’s consumable products sold across multiple channels (retail, subscription and e-commerce) are safe, compliant, and reliable. You will lead and provide technical direction in meeting BARK’s quality, food safety and compliance objectives. In this role, you will partner with a range of cross-functional teams including R&D, Sourcing, and Operations. Additionally, you will partner closely with our manufacturing partners. This role will build strong foundational safety and quality capabilities across the supply chain that provides a strong platform for future growth and development into new markets and business channels, allowing BARK to scale and meet our strategic vision. The Director of Quality and Food Safety will hire, train, and develop a team of motivated safety and quality managers, designing and building new models that are focused on reliability, performance and cost.

The successful candidate will work cross-functionally to navigate challenges, have an ability to take ownership of complex topics, e deep on all aspects of R&D and manufacturing to understand the bigger picture for our customers and business from a safety and quality perspective. This is a senior role with high visibility within the BARK senior leadership team: you must have excellent written and verbal communications, be comfortable presenting solutions in a customer and P&L data driven approach, sharp analytical approach to understanding/solving problems, and someone who will flourish in a role with considerable autonomy and visibility.

KEY DUTIES

Design, execute and/or enhance various safety and quality processes throughout the lifecycle process of our supply chain to serve retail, subscription and e-commerce channels by performing one or more of the following duties:

• Build and own the end-to-end quality and food safety process for Bark, along with metrics to measure performance with all stakeholders
• Assure BARK meets quality, food safety, and legal compliance requirements for FSMA, AAFCO, NASC, USDA, FDA, etc.
• Collaborate with R&D and Sourcing, and our third-party manufacturing partners to oversee quality compliance
• Work with Operations to implement strong Q&FS programs at all consumables fulfillment centers
• Analyze customer feedback and performance data to incorporate into the product development lifecycle
• Closely manage corrective action process
• Oversee process for onboarding new manufacturing partners and fulfillment centers, working closely with BARK legal to establish strong agreements

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum 7-10+ years experience in Quality & Food Safety with pet food industry experience and at least 5 yrs in a leadership capacity
• Active training in Food Safety Modernization Act with knowledge of GMP, HACCP, ISO22000, AAFCO, USDA, FDA, NASC
• Requires Bachelor’s degree in a related-field or equivalent experience
• Experience auditing manufacturing/plants and managing supplier quality assurance

We are currently hiring QA Analysts to:

• Test our eCommerce website and back-end systems.
• Test the Wordfence security plugin, deployed to over 4 million production WordPress websites.
• Test WordPress updates, and their compatibility with the websites that we maintain.
• Test other internal and external customer-facing web applications.

As a QA Analyst at Defiant you will be required to:

• Find new bugs in a web application, WordPress plugin or back-end application, or system.
• Discover the steps to reproduce a bug.
• Document the steps in a well-written bug report which you will file.
• Reproduce bugs reported by a customer or reported to you by our customer service team. This may require some research on your part, working with the CS team to understand what the customer reported, and finding out how to reproduce the issue.
• Verify fixes that have been implemented by the dev team and deployed to our staging environment. If you discover an issue, you'll assign the issue back to the dev team. If you verify the fix, you can mark it verified and move on, until the application or system is ready to be deployed to production.

Figuring Out What to Test and Testing Broadly

One of the skills that we value highly in great QA analysts is the ability to test broadly. What we mean by this is, rather than testing the minimum requirements when verifying a bug, we expect our analysts to come up with creative tests that may reveal problems in new code. This requires anticipating ways that a fix may affect other parts of an application or data.

Specific skills and activities that help with our approach of "testing broadly" are:

• Looking at the PHP code in a pull request, that a developer has implemented, to understand what changed, and get an idea of what else a code change may break, then testing those parts of a system.
• Using a SQL client to access the database that an application is interacting with and looking at the table structure and data. Understanding how a developer's code changes the data, and coming up with new tests, using this knowledge, that may reveal a bug.
• Looking at server error logs to determine if a test is failing silently, or creating output in the error log that may reveal a new area that can be tested to identify a bug.
• Look at the Javascript browser console to find errors that code may be silently generating, that could reveal a bug or other potential problem.

Requirements

The Required Skills for this role are:

• Experience working as a QA Analyst.
• Experience filing bugs and verifying fixes in a bug tracking system like Fogbugz.
• Experience verifying bugs in a testing or staging environment, and sending them back to dev with helpful feedback, or marking them as fixed.
• Experience testing PHP web applications.
• Experience testing browser-based Javascript code.
• Familiarity with accessing a SQL database using a SQL client, and knowledge of basic SQL is required.
• Familiarity with Git and GitHub is required. You will be reviewing pull requests to gain a deeper understanding of what you are testing. You will not be expected to commit code.

• Experience with Linux command line, command line tools, and using SSH.
• Ability to read PHP code. Ability to write PHP is preferred.
• Ability to read Javascript code. Ability to write JS code is preferred.
• Experience with MySQL and using the MySQL client to interact with the database, or another SQL database client and server, at a minimum.

Hiring Process

All positions require a trial period of approximately 2-3 weeks with a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week. You will be paid for this short-term contract, and it will be used to evaluate whether both parties want to pursue an ongoing, regular employment relationship.
