Job Summary
The Product Group at Sports Reference LLC is seeking a User Experience (UX) Designer to help us build new products and features that empower users to enjoy, understand, and share the sports they love. We currently serve 20 million (and growing) monthly users through our free, ad-supported Reference sites (Baseball-Reference.com, Basketball-Reference.com, FBref.com, etc.) and Stathead.com, our SaaS offering that provides powerful search and filtering capabilities for deeper exploration of our vast databases. In 2023, we acquired ImmaculateGrid.com, the viral baseball trivia game, and have since launched ad-supported grid games for basketball, football, hockey, and soccer. Now, we need a creative, research-focused, and outcome-driven designer to help us build our next generation of subscription products.
To Apply
Please visit our jobs website at https://sports-reference-llc.breezy.hr/ and submit your resume and a cover letter for this position. Also, as a postscript (p.s.) to your cover letter, please tell us your favorite sports team logo to demonstrate that you read the job description.
We will begin the phone interview process the week of October 28th. Applications arriving after this date will be collected but will receive consideration at the discretion of the hiring manager based on the progress we have made in filling the position. We have provided a general outline of our interview process here: https://www.sports-reference.com/job-interview-process.html
Our Purpose and Values
We democratize data, so our users enjoy, understand, and share the sports they love.
We value:
Respect for our users, the athletes we cover, and our team;
Craftsmanship in building tools and products
Reliable tools and services that meet our users' needs every day; and
Data democratization. We publish many data sets for emerging and underserved sports. For instance, the New York Times covered our recognition of the Negro Leagues as major leagues in the summer of 2021.
To meet these expectations, we encourage team members to participate in company discussions and share new ideas, features or potential solutions to problems.
Background
Many users visit our sites frequently, often daily, driven by a wide range of behaviors and interests. Our current subscription product, Stathead, meets the needs of only a small portion of these behaviors. We aim to identify, develop, and launch new subscription products that will enhance the sports fan experience for a broader range of user needs.
As a UX Designer, you will play a crucial role in understanding the erse behaviors and motivations of our users. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams to design intuitive and engaging experiences that appeal to a wider range of sports fans. By applying user research, data insights, and user-centered design, you will help shape new subscription products that will significantly expand and elevate the fan experience across our platforms.
Our guiding philosophy for visual design and user experience is “aggressively functional.” We aim to balance an extensive repository of sports data with an interface that is fast, easy to navigate, and accessible to all, encouraging exploration. Users should quickly find exactly what they’re looking for, while also discovering additional content and tools that enrich and deepen their experience.
If you find this philosophy inspiring rather than limiting, you would love working here. This role puts a primary focus on the user’s jobs to be done. While visuals may be secondary, they are not forgotten. As the Shaker design philosophy states: “Don’t make something unless it is both necessary and useful; but if it is both necessary and useful, don’t hesitate to make it beautiful.” From a design perspective, we draw more inspiration from Wikipedia than we do from most other sports sites.
User experience design at Sports Reference has traditionally been performed by a single person—our Executive Director of Design & Product Management, to whom you will report. In this new role, you will be the only dedicated designer on the team, but you’ll collaborate closely with product managers, UX researchers, and teams across Engineering, Marketing, and Data.
Goals and Tasks for Your First Year (In rough order of importance)
Must-Reach Goals and Tasks
Develop a deep understanding of our products, the users who rely on them, and the behaviors they exhibit when using our products.
Design, build, and test prototypes in line with our “aggressively functional” design ethos for multiple features that will become a part of our subscription bundle.
Work closely with our UX researcher to recruit for, plan, conduct, and synthesize user research studies. Present actionable insights to the Product group and larger team.
Be an active member of our Product group. Regularly participate in meetings, workshops, exercises, and other team rituals.
Develop strong working relationships with all other teams at Sports Reference (Engineering, Marketing, Data, and Operations and Strategic Planning) while 100% remote.
Become comfortable using our product analytics tools to gain insight into user behavior (currently a mix of GA4 and custom dashboards).
Regularly track and report progress on key user experience metrics, such as Google’s Core Web Vitals and accessibility rating.
Transition our design process to more modern tooling (such as Figma).
Nice-to-Reach Goals and Tasks
- Work with the Executive Director of Design & Product Management on goals for a future visual design refresh. This role focuses more on UX design than UI design. Strong UI design skills would be seen as a bonus.
Expectations
Complete projects related to company objectives as time and skills allow.
Continue your ongoing professional development, which we will support.
Qualifications and Skills
A qualified candidate will satisfy the following:
Proven experience in designing for user engagement. Experience working on products such as software-as-a-service (SaaS), e-commerce, or subscription-based services will be considered a bonus.
Comfort incorporating user research into the design process, using insights to inform design decisions and improve the user experience.
Have a history of getting things done (and done well).
Evidence that you are capable of meeting many of the goals listed above.
If you don’t think your application will have evidence that you can meet all of the "nice-to-reach goals and tasks" above but still are interested in the job and otherwise qualify, please apply. Nobody checks every box—we’re looking for candidates that are particularly strong in a few areas, and have some interest and capabilities in others.

🚀 About Primerli
Primerli is an early-stage, high-growth EdTech startup on a mission to raise the bar in digital learning. Let’s face it: most professional learning content is notoriously low quality. It’s boring, slow, and ineffective. At the same time, “content” elsewhere is more engaging than ever.
That’s where Primerli comes in. At Primerli, we know how to get people up to speed quickly on complex topics - and how to make it actually enjoyable. We are taking the modern standards of structure, storytelling, and production quality and applying them to create learning content that professionals want to binge-watch. We partner with industry experts with decades of experience to distill their knowledge into bite-sized, animated content that is easy to understand and enjoyable to watch. Are you a UI designer whose creativity just can’t stop driving you to make user interfaces that inspire, engage and endure?
What if you had the chance to help shape the very future of online design education?
We’ve got news for you: this may be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.
We’re proud to say that we’ve put together an amazing team of unicorns who support, inspire and challenge each other every day. We’re lucky enough to get up each day and build a better future for thousands of people around the world. What’s more, we’ve woven our commitment to the fusion of idealism, high performance and excellence into our company culture. But something’s missing. And we think it could be you.
The IxDF (Interaction Design Foundation) is the biggest online design school globally. Entering our third decade and with over 170,000 graduates, we’re market leaders in online design education. That’s because the world’s leading experts create our content and because we’re specialized in—and utterly dedicated to—design, and only design. What’s more, with over 1.5 million monthly visitors, we’re at the forefront of providing premier design education to such organizations as IBM and SAP, as well as thousands of other companies.
What will you be doing?
Your first task will be to help us with a specific, special, and long-overdue project: a complete platform redesign. We teach great design, yet we haven't updated or redesigned our own platform in seven years (don’t worry, the irony isn’t lost on us either). Back then, our design system was cutting-edge, but a lot has changed since then.
No more waiting. Now, we're ready to take our own advice and go all-in on redesigning our platform, bringing it back up to the level of excellence it deserves. We're excited about this because it's something we've been looking forward to for years. Fortunately, we're well-prepared: our design system is organized and primed for enhancement, our back-end code is flawless, our front-end code is on track, and our team of developers is eager to show off their capabilities. Now, all we need is you to complete the picture.
Therefore, ahead of you is a highly rewarding and enriching journey on which you will make an impact on the global design community, as well as strengthen your own design skills:
- Your initial task will be to transition our core flows into Figma, using advanced functionalities like components and design tokens to ensure our design system's scalability, efficiency, and reusability. We have historically used Sketch and Zeplin, with a rich repository of design rationale and annotations for each screen that you will need to adeptly incorporate into your Figma setup.
- After successfully organizing our design system and major flows within Figma, you'll shift focus to the finer details of visual design. You’ll participate in a visual redesign of our platform, and this involves meticulous attention to all the nitty-gritty of shadows, border sizes, and the dynamics of interactivity, ensuring every element contributes to the sum of all details, and the broader visual language.
- Continually maintain and grow our platform’s design system and hold the development team accountable for maintaining its code.
- Play a growing role in evolving the IxDF brand identity, implementing the visual design language across all touch points. Our video team has hundreds of pages of guidelines for video visuals, presenting ample challenges and opportunities for you.
- Shape and refine UIs, copy, microcopy, communication, etc. so that we improve the biggest force of growth we have: The better we serve our members’ true needs, the more we grow.
- If you also have a passion for UX, and not just UI design, you can, in time**:**
- help create and improve user experiences in core areas of our educational platform.
work with user insights and data to craft the best online educational experience in the world.
work with the development team, growth team and member support teams to create and implement ideas that solve the needs of our members.
Harness the ultimate magic of design: making our viewers and readers forget about their devices, so they can absorb our resources seamlessly. True design bliss.
- Help us attain and maintain our vision as the world’s premier design education resource via a solution whose look, feel, functionality and more can’t be faulted… but always have room for improvement under your watchful eye. With your help, we will never need to wait another 7 years before taking care of our platform design, and will stay on top of our game for decades to come.
Want even more challenges? If you're willing to do the hard work of learning and growing, you’ll find virtually limitless opportunities waiting for you on the road ahead.
About You
- You have many years of hands-on experience with UI design.
- You excel in advanced visual design skills, including mastery of typographic hierarchy, grid systems, color psychology, and micro-interactions, with an unyielding attention to pixel-perfect details.
- You are highly skilled in Figma, adept at leveraging its full suite of features such as auto-layout, variant components, and design tokens to create scalable and maintainable design systems.
- Your problem-solving acumen in visual design is top-tier, skillfully refining UI elements to enhance both user engagement and visual harmony.
- Your collaborative spirit thrives in multidisciplinary settings, where you synchronize design efforts with engineers, product managers, and content strategists to deliver cohesive user experiences.
- Your responsibilities will range widely, so you must be adept at iding broad duties into small, executable tasks and not lose sight of your overall mission. “Getting stuff done” is your middle name.
- You are results-driven and motivated by achievement and goals. Mediocrity gives you the chills. You know that ideas are worthless without execution, and you instantly get frustrated when people “talk too much and do too little”.
- You’re a practical idealist. You strive for perfection in everything you do, while understanding the delays that can come with waiting for something to be perfect. You know when to create results through incremental quick wins and MVPs, and when to go all in to create something perfect.
- You are based within the EMEA time zone, which is crucial to ensure optimal collaboration and overlapping working hours.
What can we offer?
- A full-time position, within a fully remote organization. Daily video-based collaboration with your colleagues from elsewhere on the planet, and you’ll get to meet up on team trips every year.
- A work culture with no fluffy titles, political agendas and corporate drama. Your colleagues value your warm character, your strong work ethic, and the results you deliver. Junior or senior, if you embody old-school virtues of always striving to deliver results, learn and become better every day, you'll thrive at the IxDF.
- A daily mission to help impact, empower, and enrich the lives of millions of people by creating affordable high-end design education to everyone across the planet. It’ll be yours too.
- A company where the distance between idea and execution is minimal. We’re a highly agile organisation with zero bureaucracy or corporate politics – and with exceptional order and efficiency.
- A company culture where passion meets high performance and excellence. To help us improve the world (and yourself in the process), you’ll need grit, strong work ethic, long-term thinking, and self-discipline.
- We thrive because we have a hands-on attitude and a bias towards action as opposed to fluff-filled, unrealistic strategies. You’ll need crisp execution skills yourself and the ability to impress your colleagues with concrete results, just like they’ll impress you.

Verifiable computing with zk-SNARKs is taking off as a solution to the scalability and privacy limitations that today's blockchains suffer from. A new wave of blockchain protocols that use zk-SNARKs to prove smart contract executions, such as Polygon zkEVM, Starknet, and zkSync, are already in production. We believe there is a big market opportunity to generate proofs for these networks at scale in a cost-effective way [1]. There are lots of interesting performance engineering challenges we need to solve to keep up with the maximum device throughput. We take the approach of co-designing hardware and software systems to accelerate SNARK generation end-to-end. Our first-generation tech stack uses FPGA accelerators running custom digital logic tailor-made for our use case [2].We also conduct cryptography research to identify computationally efficient algorithms for verifiable computing. It works better the more people are in the pool as the numbers become more reliable. But this method isn’t scalable because it is a trust-based system and the network of iniduals trusted by everyone in the pool only extends so far. Hence traditional insurance companies emerged. When Ethereum and smart contracts came along we realized we could apply our insurance industry knowledge to our passion for decentralised technology. We realized we could build a mutual on a platform where iniduals only need to trust the system, not everyone in it.Specifically, we could see a solution to the problem of agency—where an insurer looks after customers' money on their behalf. We also saw the opportunity to make significant cost savings compared to the traditional insurance model. As we’re already in the UK, we have the perfect base to build out this concept due to the existing law around mutuality. The aim is to provide our members with more simple, transparent, accessible, and affordable financial protection against their risks.More info here 👉https://nexusmutual.gitbook.io/docs/welcome/faq/nexus-mutual-the-basics #Salary and compensation
