Elephant is a health technology company tackling the big problems in global healthcare. Founded by doctors and driven by technical expertise, we are building a platform that improves outcomes, reduces costs and makes healthcare accessible for all. Our software digitises medical clinics, connects patients with healthcare systems, and empowers practitioners and patients.

Our company has deep ethical roots, combining science with ambition and social purpose. Our culture is based on bias for action and collaboration; openness and candour; passion and kindness. A short case study of our work in Kenya can be found at https://vimeo.com/369570618/a5d3d8f82f.

We are a young and fast-moving company with tonnes of ambition. Whatever role you are hired for you will need to come prepared to work dynamically and for things to change. We are looking for talented people to join our team and become central to Elephant's fabric and culture at this exciting stage of growth.

We have active offices in Nairobi, Karachi, Accra and London. Elephant was founded in 2018 and is backed by leading VC firms including Novastar Ventures, MantaRay, General Catalyst, LocalGlobe, First Minute, SeedCamp, Push Ventures and Speed Invest.

We are a small band of experts. This inspires our purpose as we focus on delivering solutions for real-world health and social care problems. Our culture is open, creative and collaborative, and we believe that products, whether used in Sudan or San Francisco should be intuitive and beautiful.

We have a firm code of principles based on transparency, safety and security, and want to build trust in all those who work with us. If you think you have what it takes, please get in touch.

Role overview

The Director of People will be responsible for managing Elephant’s human resources and employee relations across all regions and countries of operation. You will be passionate about being the key people leader in a high growth start up, building a people function and developing in-house talent.

You will oversee all aspects of the employee experience; maturing Elephant’s career progression framework and remuneration strategy; day-to-day HR and ER management as well as strategic planning for Elephant’s growth.

The role is broad: you will need to be as comfortable managing granular day to day requests from employees as you are strategically planning and driving Elephant’s culture on a macro level. We are currently a team of 120+ FTE working remotely across the UK, Europe, East and West Africa, with plans to scale considerably in the near future.

The role will report directly to the VP People and have responsibility directly to the management team. You will work closely with senior stakeholders across Operations, Engineering & Product and our global in-country teams to ensure our processes and policies are appropriate, lean and effective.

For the right candidate, this role represents the opportunity to contribute immediately to the internal culture and operations of a fast-growing technology company. We are a small start up, rapidly scaling across multiple countries and seeking a dynamic, agile and excellent team member to join us as we scale.

Responsibilities

The Director of People will be responsible for:

  • First point of contact for all human resources related queries globally, guiding and mentoring managers in the business in leading their teams, managing leave and remote working requests, disciplinary complaints and grievances processes;
  • Responsible for the continuous improvement of Elephat’s career progression and development framework including processes around reviews and promotions and succession planning;
  • Working with Elephant’s VP People to develop strategic thinking about all aspects of Elephant’s employee relations and HR functions, setting out team OKRs, reporting on metrics and successes to other stakeholders;
  • Setting the benchmark for excellence of people management across Elephant’s group companies, providing assistance to our global teams and ensuring consistency across all offices. Development and leadership of Elephant’s internal policies and procedures;
  • Working closely with senior stakeholders to develop and implement Elephant’s learning and development program, internship and graduate programs;
  • Driving employee cultural engagement projects and benefits, including social events and other cultural experiences. Guardian of Elephant’s cultural values including kindness, candor, good humour and respect; and
  • Working closely with our Talent Acquisition team to ensure seamless handover from acquisition to onboarding into the team, and evolving Elephant’s EVP to continue to attract and retain the best talent. Strategic and long term planning with our talent function for recruitment into the company and succession planning across all business groups;

Requirements

Our ideal colleague will have the following skills, attributes and experience:

  • 5+ years of people and human resources leadership experience in a similar sector or high growth startup (with globally distributed teams or SaaS product experience a bonus);
  • Strong entrepreneurial skills and an analytical and strategic mindset, including a focus on data-driven decisions, plus flexibility, agility and understanding of the challenges in working in a high growth startup;
  • Ability to produce metric - based insights into the functioning of Elephant’s people function, and balancing that with qualitative data points collected from speaking to our teams regularly. Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other data tracking tools;
  • Experience in driving people - first projects and demonstrable ability of creativity in solving people problems in a fast paced, often low resourced environment, providing managers with support;
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and the ability to inspire and motivate others. Totally mission driven and able to inspire this in others. Kind, candid and good humoured;
  • Proven ability to attract, manage and develop talent and ability to demonstrate creative solutions to these problems; and
