🏆 Mission
The mission of the Tech Lead is to continuously move Vocode’s product forward by owning and delivering complex and/or mission critical parts of our roadmap.
🤹🏽♀️ Profile & Experience
* Extremely strong generalist fullstack eng. experience (no specialization required in specific technologies, although useful if you have it; our stack is React/Next/GraphQL/Python),
* 5+ years of experience working as the senior inidual contributor on a team (i.e. whether formally designated by job title or not, you are the person expected to pick up the most challenging IC work in a cycle),* Comfort scoping and working with open ended briefs or investigative projects: you have a range of approaches to quickly and methodically arriving at solutions where there is uncertainty,* Able to help drive high performance across the engineering org. by establishing, championing, and coaching teammates on the habits and rituals required of top tier engineering teams,* Adept undertaking technical evaluations of prospective hires when required, but more likely to provide the stability and leadership required to allow CTO and VP Eng. to commit full days to recruitment,* Senior mindset: you understand what it takes to be a high performing IC on an early stage engineering team, and can take steps to optimize your own performance and that of the team by creating the required environment.🪢 Real Things You’ll Do
Here are some real examples of the sort of work you might expect to do in this role:
* Scope and own work related to our user-facing dashboard, working cross functionally with our backend engineering team and designer

Mission
The mission of the ML Engineer is to assume technical and strategic responsibility for Vocode’s roadmap as it pertains to infrastructure and pipelines bringing best-in-class models, fine-tuning, and tooling into our engineering organization.
🤹🏽♀️ Profile & Experience
* 5+ years working as a strong backend IC in more than one startup or technology company,
* Demonstrable experience evaluating and integrating modern tools and methodologies into a commercial production environment:* You have the requisite strategic and commercial acumen to make recommendations and tradeoffs which benefit both technical and commercial stakeholders, * You are comfortable taking end-to-end ownership of the implementation of your recommendations, and can make rapid progress without being blocked on specialized support (e.g. devops). * You are passionate about the ever-changing gen. AI landscape, but discerning and strategic when evaluating new technology for commercial application,* Familiarity with fine tuning and deploying models, building model evaluation frameworks, and working with large training sets.🪢 Real Things You’ll Do

Mission
The mission of the Founding Backend Engineer is to move Vocode’s product forward by taking direct ownership for delivering relevant aspects of our roadmap, and helping to create an environment where engineers of all experience levels can flourish.
🤹🏽♀️ Profile & Experience
* ≥3 years of experience as a significant contributor on an established engineering team and intentionally pursuing early stage opportunities, or a similar level of experience as the CTO, VP Eng., or senior technical IC at an early stage company,
* Deep mastery of backend engineering as an IC, and require little guidance from peers and leaders when writing code. You may have specialized in a particular language or framework along the way,* Whilst likely to have an action bias, you appreciate and seek technical strategic guidance and input when scoping projects and planning your work, and if not yet a strong strategic contributor, you would like to develop this muscle,* You are able to identify and work towards defined standards and styles as an inidual, and have broad exposure to a variety of configurations of planning, estimating, and executional cycles – but may not yet able to draw on a deep playbook for helping to drive team performance either as an IC or a leader* Familiar with the occasional uncertainty and open ended nature of delivering work at an early stage startup, and a few muscles developed to help mitigate such uncertainty in your IC work (e.g. seeking to understand commercial outcomes rather than just building to spec).🪢 Real Things You’ll Do
Here are some real examples of the sort of work you might expect to do in this role:
*
**Own the backend portion of our overhauled dashboards**\Working alongside a front end engineer, the Founding Backend Engineer would have taken overall responsibility for scoping and shipping the next generation of dashboards used internally at Vocode, and by our customers around the world. This requires strong engineering skills, and a playbook for acceptance testing, deployment, documentation, and project management – which as a founding engineer, you will need to flex regularly.\
*
**Deliver improved observability for the engineering team**\As we help our customers scale from thousands to tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of calls, we need to invest in observability. The Founding Backend Engineer would have taken overall responsibility for delivering improvements to Sentry to assist with debugging calls, deriving useful aggregate metrics, and generally making it effortless for us to analyze performance of a large volume of concurrent tests.\

- Increasing test coverage and conducting code reviews.
- Regularly deploying code with zero downtime.
**About you

- CSS and UI is your passion.
- You have strict experience with at least one modern front-end framework.

- …if you hold a Master’s Degree in Computer Science.
**What we can offer
**- A founder and CEO who is also a developer, understanding your challenges and triumphs.
- A zero-effort development environment based on Docker, streamlining your workflow.
- The opportunity to refine and develop battle-tested guidelines for JS and CSS.
- Access to a comprehensive library of books and courses, ensuring your skills and knowledge remain at the forefront.
- A full-time position, within a fully remote organization. Daily video-based contact with your colleagues from elsewhere on the planet, and you’ll get to meet them on team trips 1–2 times per year.
- Forget fluffy titles, political agendas and corporate drama. Your colleagues value your character, work ethic, and what you actually achieve. Junior or senior, if you embody old-school virtues of always striving to become the best version of yourself, you'll thrive at the IxDF.
- Work with a highly scalable impact-driven model where we’ve consistently created more than 50% growth year-on-year since 2013. Bootstrapped with zero investment capital but built purely on consistency over time and the conviction that affordable design education can improve the quality of life of humankind.
- Work in a company where the distance between idea and execution is minimal. We’re a highly agile organization with zero bureaucracy or corporate politics – but with a high level of orderliness and efficiency.
- Have the chance to feel the impact of helping an ever-growing design education brand empower and enrich the lives of millions of people.
- Work in a company culture where idealism meets high performance and excellence. To help us improve the world (and yourself in the process), you’ll need grit, work ethic, long-term thinking, and self-discipline.
- Work with people who have a hands-on attitude and a bias towards action as opposed to fluff-filled, unrealistic strategies. You’ll need crisp execution skills yourself and the ability to impress your colleagues with concrete results, just like they’ll impress you.

* Extremely strong generalist backend eng. experience (no specialization required in specific technologies, although useful if you have it),
* 5+ years of experience working as the senior inidual contributor on a team (i.e. whether formally designated by job title or not, you are the person expected to pick up the most challenging IC work in a cycle),* Comfort scoping and working with open ended briefs or investigative projects: you have a range of approaches to quickly and methodically arriving at solutions where there is uncertainty,* Able to help drive high performance across the engineering org. by establishing, championing, and coaching teammates on the habits and rituals required of top tier engineering teams,* Adept undertaking technical evaluations of prospective hires when required, but more likely to provide the stability and leadership required to allow CTO and VP Eng. to commit full days to recruitment,* Senior mindset: you understand what it takes to be a high performing IC on an early stage engineering team, and can take steps to optimize your own performance and that of the team by creating the required environment.🪢 Real Things You’ll Do
Here are some real examples of the sort of work you might expect to do in this role:
*
**Scope and manage our on-prem project**\Some of our enterprise customers require secure on-prem deployments of Vocode’s hosted API. The VP Eng. would have been working alongside our sales team to gather requirements, craft an overall strategy for delivery, and build & estimate a backlog of work.\
*
**Work alongside our Open Source Maintainer to codify and articulate “the Vocode standard”**\We’re committed to building a thriving community around our open source library, and to do that we need to help the community contribute code to our repo. As Vocode’s internal “bar raiser” on technical output, you would be instrumental to designing and articulating the guidelines we provide to our contributors, balancing pragmatism – not everyone was a Comp. Sci. TA at the University of Awesome – with the need to establish and drive towards a common standard.\

🏆 Mission
The mission of the VP Engineering is to help our CTO build and lead an engineering team where exceptional software engineers are developed, recruited, and empowered to do the best work of their careers.
🤹🏽♀️ Profile & Experience
* Extremely strong generalist backend eng. experience (no specialization required in specific technologies, although useful if you have it),
* 5+ years of experience leading an engineering function as a CTO, VP, tech lead, etc., leaning in to either leading as a high performing IC or leading as a coach and manager,* Still close enough to IC work (or sufficiently drawn to it) to have direct responsibility for writing and shipping big parts of our roadmap,* Comfort working with business context (e.g. P&L) and translating commercial imperatives (e.g. “gross margin should be X%”) into both strategic and tactical work for product & engineering,* Experience of the commercial dynamics of enterprise collaborations (e.g. solution engineering) and/or familiarity with approaches (inidually or as a team) to customer relationship management as an engineer,* Adept leading and participating in recruitment initiatives, including technical interviews and assessing for culture (exposure to a wide variety of assessment strategies, e.g. topgrading, is a bonus),* Senior mindset: you might care about hoodies and unlimited PTO, but you’re likely to be more preoccupied with scoping work appropriately, developing your team, and helping people (and yourself) to work in your areas of maximum leverage.🪢 Real Things You’ll Do
Here are some real examples of the sort of work you might expect to do in this role:
*
**Revamp Vocode’s RAG Pipeline**\By now, incorporating a knowledge base as context to an LLM is ubiquitous, but we need to run document retrieval accurately and with as little impact to conversation latency as possible. The VP of Eng. would be tasked with owning this project end-to-end, including:\\* Self-hosting our own vector DB infra to not lose out on network latency,\* Computing state-of-the-art embeddings efficiently at scale (e.g. hosting an open-source model).\\
*
**Work alongside flagship enterprise customers to optimize performance at scale**\Vocode’s enterprise customers are deploying conversational AI into the frontlines of customer support, operations, and sales. You’d have spent time testing and optimizing these deployments, both in direct consultation with technical and commercial stakeholders on the client side, and internally where we can improve Vocode’s infrastructure.\
*
**Help** **figure out our approach to remote work**\We generally believe that early stage startups naturally suit colocated teams because colocation reduces the overhead for information exchange, rapport-building, quick pairing and collaboration on work, etc. We’re also conscious that many people periodically prefer to work from home in bursts to prioritize productivity, and that a significant amount of talent is outside of our home base (the bay area). The VP Eng. would have been instrumental in shaping this conversation.\

I’m building a startup in the B2B email service provider space and am looking for a technical co-founder (or two). Here’s who I am, where I’m at, and what I’m looking for.
**
The Team**I have over 10 years experience in B2B SaaS in various roles in product and revenue. Recently, I was a key contributor as the first non-founder hire at an early-stage startup, leading product and revenue, and helping take the company to a ~$20 million exit.
I strive to be a decent and kind human who is passionate about delivering quality work, but doesn’t let it define my identity or compromise my character.
**
The Opportunity**I’m building an email service provider focused on B2B cold emails. The Ideal Customer Profile centers on small businesses, solopreneurs, and startups.
There are transactional email providers, and email providers that focus on business customers, but there aren’t any established email service providers focused on B2B cold emails.
I don’t see this as a hyper-growth startup that will sell for $100 million. However, the range of outcomes vary from a lifestyle business that is doing $500k ARR and will sell for $3 million, to a business doing $5 million ARR that will sell for $30 million (based on average historical B2B SaaS EV / Revenue multiples). The base case, which I’d be happy with, wouldn’t require an extensive buildout of a user-facing webmail frontend. The upside case probably would.
There is also an opportunity here to leverage the customer base for market research, in order to validate demand for other products.
I don’t think we should raise outside funding (friends and family I’m open to). This way, we get to keep our equity and independence, pay ourselves accordingly, and take the business where we see fit.
I understand that this opportunity comes with some risk.
So why am I doing this? Why do I think this is worth investing my time and money in?
Some things in our favor:
- I have a combined 10+ years experience in B2B SaaS. I have experience being an early stage contributor in B2B SaaS and leading a company to exit.
- The market for the product is large with little direct competition. The product category and feature-set is well-defined.
- I have a strong understanding of the features needed for an MVP, documented in a product requirements doc.
- I’ve validated new products and new features before.
- Once a customer base is built, we can validate demand for other products.
Lastly, I don’t plan to raise institutional money. Maybe we’d do a friends and family round, if necessary. This will let us scale profitably by putting the customer first. If we exit, we’ll get to keep more of the proceeds because we didn’t give away a bunch of equity.
**
You**You’ll be responsible for all technical aspects of the business, primarily the creation and maintenance of the email hosting, sending, and receiving infrastructure, and user-facing web application, from mockups to MVP to production. I’m at the very beginning of the process, though as described above I have a clear vision for the business and product.
_
After a first chat, I’d be happy to share a detailed business overview and features and requirements doc, in order to give you a better understanding of scope._Since this is a startup, every co-founder will end up fulfilling many roles and doing a variety of things, but here is a more structured list of your responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain the email hosting, sending, and receiving infrastructure
- Develop and maintain the user-facing web application end-to-end, from mockups to MVP and beyond
- Deliver responsive, high-performance, and compelling user interfaces
- Lead the development and implementation of the technical aspects of the startup
The obvious requirement is proven experience in software development, with understanding and experience in building a web application from mockups to working product. The other requirement is experience with building and maintaining email infrastructure at scale (thousands of domains and addresses, millions of emails sent monthly).
If you’ve done some or all of the following, you’ll likely be a good candidate from a technical perspective:
- Built and maintained a production email service provider that ran at scale — thousands of email addresses hosted with millions of emails sent monthly
- Built B2B SaaS products, in general
- Worked with architectures that support multiple APIs
- Worked on high-volume email sync and storage
⠀ What is equally, if not more, important is your character. I want to work with people who are independent and can listen, empathize, and navigate disagreement productively and with kindness. You have empathy for the customer and the ability and patience to navigate all the ups and downs of a startup.
While it wouldn’t be your main responsibility, a sense of business acumen is important as well. We’ll be working on defining roadmap together, after all.
We’ll be spending a substantial amount of time together, so our values should align. Some things I value are kindness, fairness, transparency, meaningful work, and personal freedom.
Beyond that, I don't care where or how you work. Just be responsive and able to make meetings. You are your own person, and I trust you to make the best decisions for your life and the business.
By joining me, you'll have a chance to have a significant impact on a business that, if successful, will give you time and location freedom. Along the way, you'll be doing meaningful work with people you enjoy being around.
**
Since we’d be bootstrapping this, there’d be no salary to start. Equity will be assumed equal split and adjusted accordingly.**Thanks for reading this, and I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Healthcare needs good data. For patients, that means taking ownership of their records and understanding what is in them. For researchers, it means transforming piles of messy medical records into structured, research ready datasets. At PicnicHealth, we build technology that makes both of these possible. We do this by working directly with patients and leveraging state of the art machine learning to retrieve and process medical data in any form that it exists. To date we’ve helped tens of thousands of patients securely access their records and proactively contribute to advancing research in diseases that impact their lives across a large spectrum of observational studies and drug and disease registries.
Founded in 2014, PicnicHealth partners with 12 of the top 20 biopharma companies and has raised over $100 million in venture capital from investors including Amplify Partners, Felicis Ventures, and B Capital Group.
And we are just getting started! If you are looking to join an award winning, mission-driven, motivated team that is making a real impact across millions of people’s lives, PicnicHealth might just be the place for you.
The Opportunity
PicnicHealth requests and processes tens of thousands of pages of medical records each week to build a timeline of each patient’s healthcare journey. For those willing to contribute their data to research, we then assemble some of the richest real-world evidence datasets available. This process is made possible by systems and applications that we develop in our Data Production squad. Central to Data Production is the HIPE application (Human-in-the-Loop Processing Engine), which uses sophisticated machine learning and carefully-designed UI/UX to help experts quickly and accurately extract data from medical records as we receive them. Data Production also includes the tooling and processes used to bundle together and deliver data for research. We’re looking for an experienced Product Engineer to drive impact on this team through implementing

About Vocode
🎯 Our Mission
Vocode is empowering developers to connect the world with magical conversational AI experiences. Today, our open source and hosted APIs are relied upon by thousands of engineers and organizations to create scalable, performant conversational AI agents operating on the front lines of myriad business cases: multilingual customer support, appointment scheduling, identity verification, lead qualification, and much more.
📈 Our Progress
Since graduating from YC (W23), we’ve:
1. Raised $3.25m from great investors: Base10, Google Ventures, Gradient, Accel, and angels like Amjad Masad (Replit), Avlok Kohli (AngelList), and Siqi Chen (Runway),
2. Validated product/market fit, with dozens of enterprise customers scaling deployments in production and paying us real $,3. Begun to assemble an amazing team of highly technical folks to build a company together, with early hires from Apple, Brex, Stripe, and beyond.🫱🏽🫲🏼 Our Ways of Working
At Vocode we are deliberate and intentional about the company we’re working to build. We want to foster an environment of autonomy, kindness, curiosity, and achievement, but we’re not expecting to commission a fluorescent “BE CURIOUS” sign for the wall of our office any time soon. Here are some things which we know really matter to us:
1. We try to write things downWe find that the act of writing something down – the scope of a project, a problem we’re facing, an update for the whole company – helps us to be clear in our thinking, and enables us to share context around our team without lots of meetings and talking.
2. We try to default to trustThis goes further than just “you’ll get a Brex card” – from day one you will be plugged in to the same context as everyone else on our team, and we’ll trust you to help us interpret it and set your own direction. (We also recognize that, like everyone, you’ll get things wrong – and we’ll trust you to help the company grow when that happens.)3. We seek clarity in communicationWriting things down helps, but we also love impeccable agreements, having directly responsible iniduals (even for work which is cross-functional), and generally investing the extra 10% which means everyone is unambiguously clear on what’s going on and what it means for them.About the Senior Full Stack Engineer (Ops) Role
🏆 Mission of the Senior Full Stack Engineer (Ops)
The mission of the Senior Full Stack Engineer (Ops) is to design and build high ROI improvements, integrations, and automations across Vocode’s Marketing, Sales, and Customer Success teams.
🤹🏽♀️ Profile & Experience
* Senior inidual contributor comfortable working with business context/outcomes vs. detailed specs,
* You are analytical and disciplined in your approach to quantifying the impact of your work and your priorities,* You are consistently recognized by leaders and peers as being an outstanding IC:* Direct, broad ownership of mission critical work (cross-functional a plus), * Sought out by leadership and peers as the gold standard in one or more areas (e.g. rapid prototyping, infrastructure, documentation – you are able to point to areas of demonstrable mastery), * Can point to times when you have been asked to “teach the class” either one-on-one or in a group, bringing teammates up to your high standard of excellence. * You have developed the muscle for when “hack it together” trumps “meticulous and scalable”, and vice versa,* Early-stage startup experience, either as a founding employee or CTO, a plus.🪢 Real Things You’ll Do
Here are some real examples of the sort of work you might expect to do in this role:
*
**Migrate our hosted customers away from Discord to a new Slack workspace**\Discord makes sense for our open source customers, but folks building with our hosted solution should be in Slack, where our sales, support, and engineering teams can help them as required. In addition to migrating existing customers, you would have updated our registration flows to trigger the creation of a Slack connect channel for new customers upon confirmation of their email.\
*
**Build high polish sales demos**\Conversational AI is new technology, and many of our customers and sales prospects find it invaluable for us to illustrate the possibilities for them, from customer-facing use cases to new approaches in internal systems and tooling, all powered by Vocode’s conversational AI.\
*
**Integrate, Automate, and Iterate**\Laying rails between our internal systems means our people can work ever more autonomously: our registration flow should qualify prospects and feed into Pipedrive. Our sales people should be able to generate Docusign agreements and Stripe billing logic for customers with a few clicks in Pipedrive. When we do something manually a bunch of times, we’ll be expecting you to swoop in and make it a smooth experience for mere mortals.\
*
**& much more**\Working with a designer and the founders to overhaul our website and messaging. Build a best in class API and docs experience. Build knowledge bases internally, on our website, and via AI agents (e.g. Amazon Q) for Vocoders and Vocode customers alike. Triage sales requirement calls and help reduce sales dependency on ad hoc engineering expertise.\
