Who We Are
Float is the world’s leading software for teams to plan their time. Launched in 2012, we’ve grown every year since, and remain proudly independent, self-funded and profitable. We’re a team of 46 working 100% remotely and you’ll be partnering with team members distributed across the world including Australia, Canada, Mexico and Taiwan. Hear what our team has to say by browsing our blog, or reading our Glassdoor reviews. Check out what our customers think of Float from our G2 reviews.
We’re on a scale up journey, and we’re seeking people who thrive in this stage, given the autonomy, and the opportunity, to do the best work of their career.
Why We’re Hiring For This Role
Our front-end team is responsible for our customer facing applications which are the primary method by which our customers get their value from Float. We support a web application, an iOS app, an Android app, and a desktop app (Electron), all of which share a considerable amount of code, and they are only getting bigger.
As our product continues to grow our customer base continues to grow with it. We are seeking a skilled engineer to help move things forward and also to provide the all important coverage and maintenance to ensure that we can continue to deliver the high quality experience that our customers have come to expect.
That’s where you come in.
You’ll join a smart, capable group of engineers specifically focused on the web application, ensuring that the primary vehicle to deliver value remains exactly that. You’ll be helping to push forward the state of the art in web-based resource management, allowing customers to make the most of their time and providing value far beyond our cost.
We have some ambitious goals as a company and in order to fulfill them, we have some equally ambitious goals for our web application. We’re keen to be able to support our customers as they become more successful and grow, and this ever-increasing growth is starting to challenge some of our older systems. We’re eager to re-imagine our front-end so that we are able to support customers that are multiples the size of our current larger customer.
In this role, you’ll be an integral member of the team, contributing regular impactful changes and improvements to an application used for significant intervals of time each day by over 4,000 customers.
Our Team Lead, Haakon, explains the important role you will play within our Interfaces team. Watch this video. You’ll be working asynchronously with a bright, dedicated team from across the globe, with a strong focus on taking complex problems and creating solutions that feel simple and intuitive for our customers.
What You’ll Be Responsible For
You’ll join our web application team and after an initial familiarization process you’ll likely find yourself leading a product-focused project in an upcoming cycle – perhaps bringing to life our project reports with improved charts and visualizations, or adding delight to every interaction of our onboarding experience. You’ll be responsible for discussing the specification with the Product and Design stakeholders, understanding the problem to be solved and satisfying yourself that we are able to produce a deliverable satisfying any constraints - performance being a key one.
Over time, you’ll likely specialize in some particular area of our application based on the overall front-end architecture, being responsible for resolving any regressions or bugs within that area as well as being the point of contact for any customer-sourced queries or similar.
As you become more comfortable with the product as a whole, it would be expected that you become more involved in the wider-ranging discussions on the future direction of our front-end architecture, and in particular how we can ensure that our web application can evolve to support our ambitious scaling goals, whether that be by wholesale rewrites of certain areas or strategic incremental changes or even simply more process & guidelines around how to develop within this performance-critical area.
You will quickly become a core member of the team, responsible for customer visible aspects of our product, working with our User Experience team to understand how our customers work with our product and how they want to use it, so that we can help them to make the most of it.
What You’ll Need To Be Successful
We’re looking for a strong, seasoned engineer with at least six years experience in leading and shipping successful and demanding projects to a global audience, working as part of a small focused team to deliver objectives, being comfortable managing your time and communicating clearly with other members of the team.
You’ll be excited and eager to work on a sophisticated web application and solve data and presentation problems in a performant manner for our world-wide user-base. You’ll understand the commitment that requires but also the fascinating challenges it can present.
You’d be described by your colleagues as a React expert and are completely comfortable working in an application written with React combined with Redux and Reselect for the state management aspects.
You have a passion for usability and able to account for the needs and ergonomics of both the end users of our interfaces, and the developers that will build them.
With respect to styling, we favor a CSS-in-JS approach that does not rely heavily on utility classes—no Tailwind here!
We’re currently in the process of migrating our front-end codebase to TypeScript, so familiarity with that is crucial.
In addition, you should be familiar with Jest or Vitest for all things testing and should be comfortable operating in a monorepo environment.
Experience with the following would be a big plus:
- Building Android and iOS apps with React Native
- Implementing Design Systems as a means to bridge the gap between design and development and provide a consistent user experience
- Accommodating accessibility standards and best-practices
- Working with distributed systems & event-based architectures at scale
Finally, you should be very comfortable working asynchronously, since the nature of our Engineering team is that we are distributed around the world. We rely on clear, concise, and proactive written communication to ensure we all have clarity and that any problems are raised in good time so we have the necessary time to react. You will have the freedom to set your own schedule and the autonomy to do so - provided you continue to deliver and communicate, we’re very hands-off on how you structure your days.
Why Join Us
Pay for this role is US $161,475. Here’s a blog post with more information on how we determine our salaries.
We’re a global async remote company with a erse team of people from all over the world who share a common belief in living our best work life. We believe deeply in the idea of transparency and share our Float Handbook publicly so potential new team members can see first hand our perks & benefits as well as our ways of working. If you feel like you can thrive at Float to do your best work, we would love to hear from you.
_Note: Industry research shows that women and those in traditionally underrepresented groups generally don’t apply to jobs unless they check all the boxes for the role. If you feel strongly that you have what it takes for this role but don’t check 100% of the boxes—that’s okay—we encourage you to apply anyway and highlight what you can bring to the table.

We invite you to visit our blog to learn more about us, our values, and how we work.
About the role
We are looking for a leader for our Backend team who is highly technical and passionate about creating and maintaining high-quality software that powers long-lasting products, namely Todoist and Twist.
Both are monolithic Python applications, built using a homegrown framework similar to Flask and in the beginnings of a transition to FastAPI. We use AWS extensively, including Aurora, SQS, and ECS Fargate.
You will:
- Grow, support, and empower a world-class team of 11 Backend Engineers (including 3 Leads) who are autonomous, productive, and fulfilled. You will be responsible for setting the team up for success while coaching and providing guidance along the way.
- Foster continuous improvement while reorganizing the team’s workflows and processes as context changes. You will ensure that tooling and workflows are appropriate, and facilitate team brainstorms while driving and documenting high-level ideas, goals, and best practices. You will foster knowledge sharing.
- Drive the vision, technical strategy, and technical roadmap for the team and its technology stack. You will do this in an egalitarian way, often facilitating discussions and delegating decision-making. You will do this at scale, serving tens of millions of users and billions of data items.
- Plan and prioritize company-wide initiatives, coordinating and communicating with various technical and non-technical stakeholders, such as other Engineering teams, Product, or Customer Experience.
- Plan and prioritize internal initiatives that pay back debt and modernize our systems, contributing to each work cycle by reviewing priorities, availability, and optimal matching of people to projects. You will periodically share updates so that everyone is aware of what’s going on behind the scenes.
- Contribute to shared values, standards, and processes with other Engineering leaders, ultimately shaping up Engineering at Doist as a whole. You will report to the CTO.
About you

- Having ambition, drive, and experience in building long-lasting codebases and APIs that serve millions of real customers and are continuously improved and modernized.
- Being technical and hands-on. You understand that engineering management is a technical discipline that requires engaging in technical decision-making. You realize that strong technical instincts and continuously honing them is vital for thriving in that process.
- Building teams primarily based on trust, autonomy, and transparency. You provide high-level vision in a way that’s inspiring to pursue and easy to understand, while carefully incorporating input from the team and spreading ownership over its execution.
- Supporting and mentoring a resilient team while investing in each person’s inidual growth. You realize that leadership comes with responsibility and restraint and that your topmost priority is the motivation and well-being of your team.
- Focusing on the long-term and uncompromising in your and Doist’s values. You want to join a remote-first company that’s multicultural and distributed worldwide, and you’re looking to commit to this challenge for many years.

How We Hire
We have a merit-based recruitment process because we want to hire the best people. So University degrees aren’t a requirement for any role, and we have no such thing as a ersity quota.
Your application will be considered holistically. For example, someone with a marketing degree applying for an influencer management role but no industry contacts would not be chosen over a high school dropout that has a deep network and a history of structuring great deals.
On the other hand, a degree could be a big plus for a research assistant application as it proves your ability to persevere and focus on high-level tasks. It’s all about context.
So if you think you’re the best, it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from — introduce yourself.
After submitting an initial application, here’s the usual process for shortlisted candidates:
- Let your skills shine through a technical assessment
- Join us for an interview and Q+A with a Senior Dev from our team + HR
- We make an offer
We try our best to respond to every application. But sometimes this isn't possible due to the large application volume. If you don't hear from us in 2-3 weeks, it means that we've most likely progressed with other candidates.

Candidate Interview Guide
Senior Frontend Engineer
Alma is seeking a mission-driven Frontend Engineer to join one of our newest teams, Support/Internal Tools. We are dedicated to building tools and services which help our providers more easily manage and grow their practice. In this role, you will be building features that solve real problems for mental health providers. The ideal candidate is able to recognize that successful software development requires communication, experimentation, and iteration.
The Support / Internal Tools squad will introduce tools and resources that decrease providers’ (and ultimately, clients’) reliance on the CX team, and allows for providers and clients to more easily answer questions, or solve problems without the support of an Ops member. Additionally, the squad will be responsible for maturing our operational processes (particularly for the activation and CX teams) by implementing new internal tooling that allows for increased operational efficiencies.
On this scaling team, you will have a strong hand in defining Alma’s features, services, and architecture. The ideal person for this role loves to collaborate with other teams to design and build amazing digital experiences.
What you’ll do:
- Gain a deep understanding of what Alma providers do, how they operate, and where their pain points are.
- Design, develop, and implement maintainable and scalable client-side features using modern front-end web technologies (HTML, CSS, Webpack, React).
- Develop both member-facing and internal-facing features around onboarding, scheduling, billing, and client management.
- Collaborate with teammates, PMs, and designers to conceptualize and build solutions for practical problems facing Alma members.
- Ensure applications and services meet Alma’s standards for software including performance, scalability, and security.
Who you are:
- You have 4+ years of experience building web experiences
- You enjoy customer-centered software development and collaborating closely with a team of engineers, designers, and product managers.
- You possess a desire to experiment, (succeed or fail), and use research and data, where appropriate, to make data-driven decisions.
- You have extensive experience with web technologies. We are language agnostic in our interviews but require experience with one or more common web frameworks (React, Angular, etc.).
- You are proficient with CSS preprocessors (Sass, Less, etc.).
- You have an understanding of accessibility and semantic HTML.
- You have experience interacting with APIs.
- You have experience writing frontend unit tests in a testing platform such as jest or mocha.
- You have a proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as Git.
Benefits:
- We’re a remote-first company
- Health insurance plans through Cigna (medical and dental) and MetLife (vision), including FSA & HSA plans
- 401k plan (Roth and traditional)
- Free Alma platform access
- Monthly therapy and wellness stipends
- Monthly co-working space membership stipend
- Monthly work-from-home stipend to power your wifi, lunches, coffee, etc
- Pet discount program through United Pet Care
- Financial perks and rewards through BenefitHub
- Free EAP access through LifeWorks
- One-time home office stipend to set up your home office
- Comprehensive parental leave plans
- 9 paid holidays, 1 Alma Mental Health Day, and 1 Alma Volunteering Day
- Flexible PTO

We're a small, rapidly growing software agency looking to add another senior-level software developer to our team to help balance our workloads.
About us (the good and the bad
- We're a team of 3.5, so pretty small.
- We're all developers here, so we understand that estimates aren't always accurate, software takes time, and sometimes things take more time than initially expected - all par for the course.
- We're a services company, so there's a wide variety of different things you'd be working on, and there are often changes in priorities from week-to-week and month-to-month.
- We do a mix of ground-up development for startups (creating new web apps from scratch), automation work, and work on existing codebases.
- A lot of our work is MVP & product-focused, meaning we often value shipping small, functional, but imperfect pieces of functionality rather than highly-scalable subsystems.
- Our primary tech is Next.js (v13 with pages directory), Vercel, React, Typescript, Prisma, PostgreSQL, Twilio, Sendgrid, and NextAuth; but we occasionally have work that veers into Python, Flutter, Rust, Node.js, AWS (mainly lambdas and s3), VBA, Zapier, and Airtable (I try to steer us away from Airtable though).
- We don't do any work at all in RoR, Go, or a slew of other languages.
- We're based in Phoenix, AZ, but we're a fully remote company - so you can work from anywhere.
We're looking for someone to...
- Tackle miscellaneous challenges across multiple projects.
- Figure out solutions to random problems that crop up from time to time
- Design prisma.schema files to represent the data layer of new MVPs
- Implement CRUD APIs with Next.js
- Occasionally work in something you've never worked in before (e.g. writing an occasional VBA script, or researching the requirements of a WhatsApp integration). In these cases there's the natural understanding that you've not done XYZ before, and might need additional resources (like a mac/windows-pc, or a subscription to some service, or something) and/or time to complete it - which it's our job to get you what you need.
- Build scaffolding for new projects
- Occasionally develop rapid prototypes, that have a lot of stubbed out functionality
Things that are specifically NOT a part of this job (ignore the double-negatives):
- No customer support
- No customer management / sales
- (In other words, this is NOT a customer-facing position)
Our ideal candidate has:
- 5+ years experience with React or similar frameworks
- Experience in both front and backend development
- A product mindset
- A willingness to bounce between different projects
Salary & Benefits:
- $120k per year (full-time, w2), plus bonuses based on overall company performance
- Health stipend
- 3 weeks PTO plus holidays
- This isn't really a "benefit" per se, but just to reiterate: this position is fully remote
Hiring Process & Timeline:
- We strive to keep this simple/streamlined.
- Two interviews total:
- First one 30-60 minutes to discuss background, talk at a technical level about some of the stuff you've done in the past, and generally get a feel for each other
- Second one ~60 minutes to e deeper into technical topics (no coding)
- A third conversation to discuss offer details and/or answer any questions you have, and generally to make sure you have all the time you need to feel out if we're a good fit for you (in other words: this one is entirely for your benefit - it can be as long or as short as you want it to be)
- In a perfect world, we'd love to do a part-time engagement through November/December, and shift to full time at the start of January. We're open to jumping immediately into full time though for the right candidate; happy to discuss.
Next steps:
- Reach out! Send us your resume using the form below, or email us directly at [email protected]
- We'll be reviewing applications and scheduling interviews as they come in, and will generally respond within a week.

**About Learning Tapestry
**Hi! We're Learning Tapestry. We're a 25+ person all-remote, global organization dedicated to making digital learning "just work" for educators and learners alike. We solve hard problems in complex education technology environments. We’re a triple bottom line company: we make a profit like any good business; our work makes the world better (“social impact”); and we strive to create a healthy internal work environment for everyone who works here. For our staff we believe in flexible work locations and working arrangements. We empower all of our team members to manage their schedules and adjust as necessary. We're focused on results and impact, not locations and hours. We hire people with great technical ability, but we also expect everyone at Learning Tapestry to have strong character and solid communication skills. We highly value effective software architecture, test-driven development methods, and good project management methodology. We believe in having a strong CI and deployment pipeline that enables us to focus on writing good software.
What We're Looking For
You’re an exceptional professional software engineer with at least 7 years of software engineering experience. You’re comfortable in multiple languages, but in particular you are strong in backend coding using Ruby or Node.js, and frontend engineering React (or you are expert in an alternative frontend framework and are willing to learn/use React for some projects). Our ideal candidate is available 30-40 hours per week, with at least 4 hours overlapping with business hours in the US Eastern time zone, and at least 1 hour overlapping with business hours in the US Pacific time zone. We ask everyone who works here to be fluent or strongly proficient in written and spoken English, and easily understood by US-based speakers (we ask for this to allow everyone in the company to be able to communicate with each other, rather than having to go through intermediates).
Required Skills and Experience
- At least seven years of Software Engineering Experience, with a minimum of five years doing senior engineering work such as solution design, architecture, code review, full stack engineering, or similar tasks..
- You have very good written communication skills, fluent written English, and comfortable, clear spoken English.
- Must have availability that overlaps with our clients at least 4 hours/day in New York (UTC -5) and at least 1 hour/day in California (UTC -8)
- You can write in multiple languages fluently, efficiently, and reliably, and are expert in writing in Ruby or Node.js, and React (or similar modern JS framework).
- Help maintain professional standards for the entire organization.
- Has deep, substantial expertise in multiple programming environments.
- Capable of running and directing small teams of engineers for substantial projects.
- Capable of executing projects across multiple technical domains (“full stack,” data architecture, devops, etc).
- Has an interest and ability to learn new technical subjects when you need to solve new types of problems.
- Can pursue investigation and problem solving into issues to resolve them, and can also recognize when it’s more efficient to ask for help vs push forward to solve a problem. Believes that all technical problems are solvable with enough effort.
- Has humility and kindness with regards to others and their own abilities. Seeks to help others; seeks to share what they know; wants to see their work have impact in the world.
- Substantial, practical expertise in implementing:
- SQL-based databases
- Can design complex data structure implementations.
- Can write SQL queries and make performance optimizations.
- Can implement standard connectivity to/from SQL servers.
- DevOps
- Deployment and CI/CD
- Has a solid knowledge of designing and implementing devops pipelines, using tools such as docker, kubernetes, or related systems.
- Can design basic, secure (cloud) networks for web server type systems.
- Can develop strategies for managing cached data to optimize performance, using tools like Fastly, Cloudfront, Cloudflare, other CDNs, Varnish, or Redis.
- Can develop or integrate coding projects with cloud-based architecture such as AWS API Gateway, Route66 (and DNS generally), SSL certificates, cloud-based private network routing, etc.
- Understands basic infosec principles to design, evaluate, and operate systems securely.
- Solutions Design / Systems Architecture
- Can work with business analysts, product managers, and senior executives to understand the business problems and propose, adapt, and design technical solutions to meet those needs.
- Can translate technical concepts to non-technical audiences and simplify complex concepts without oversimplifying.
- Ability to explain technical issues in actionable ways to non-technical people.
- Can design and configure/operate the technical systems required to implement a technical solution.
- Will understand the business purpose and continually reflect on how the technology is meeting that purpose, and will push back when the alignment between product, tech and business purpose seems “off.”
- Understands cryptography and security enough to design systems that use existing login/identity standards securely (OAuth2, JWTs, etc).
- Is not overly enamored with brand new technologies, and has the maturity and experience to evaluate new technology against existing solutions objectively.
- Can write clear, simple specifications to reflect how a system will be built.
- Testing and Reliability Engineering
- Understands TDD vs manual QA Engineering, and where each is appropriate in developing software.
- Insists on building automated testing frameworks when necessary for software pipelines, and knows how to implement “enough testing” without relying on a “test everything” approach.
- Can design functional monitoring solutions for uptime management.
- Capable of implementing test automation using tools such as Cypress, Postman, Swagger/OpenAPI.
- Can write developer docs for a project to assist a new engineer in learning to develop in a codebase.
- Can define uptime failure recovery documentation: what to do when a system fails.
- Can debug and analyze production systems for faults.
- Can use New Relic, Skylight, JMeter, and similar tools to find performance and design faults and improvements.
Bonus Skills
- Experience in Ed Tech Field (Education projects)
- Experience with Project Management tools, such as Github boards, Trello, Asana, or Jira. (We generally use Github boards.)

About the team
The Crossref team is distributed across the world. The Software Development team is based in Europe and the US. We work alongside the Product, Infrastructure and Labs teams.
All new code, and most issue tracking, is open source. We strongly believe in open scholarly infrastructure and openness at all stages of the software development lifecycle. We perform code reviews and practice continuous deployment for all new code.
As a membership organization we keep closely in touch with our users, and encourage our developers to be familiar with our community.
We work fully remotely, but try to meet in person at least once a year. This is a full-time position, but working hours are flexible. The applicant should expect they will need to travel internationally to work with colleagues for about 5-10 days a year. If you have any questions we would be happy to discuss.
You can be based anywhere in the world where we can employ staff, either directly or through an employer of record.
About Crossref
We’re a not-for-profit membership organization that exists to make scholarly communications better. We rally the community; tag and share metadata; run an open infrastructure; play with technology; and make tools and services—all to help put research in context.
Crossref sits at the heart of the global exchange of research information, and our job is to make it possible—and easier—to find, cite, link, assess, and reuse research, from journals and books, to preprints, data, and grants. Through partnerships and collaborations we engage with members in 148 countries (and counting) and it’s very important to us to nurture that community.
We’re about 45 staff and remote-first. This means that we support our teams working asynchronously and to flexible hours. Some international travel will likely be appropriate, for example to in-person meetings with colleagues and members, but in line with our travel policy. We are dedicated to an open and fair research ecosystem and that’s reflected in our ethos and staff culture. We like to work hard but we have fun too! We take a creative, iterative approach to our projects, and believe that all team members can enrich the culture and performance of our whole organisation. Check out the organisation chart.
We are active supporters of ongoing professional development opportunities and promote self-learning at every opportunity. Crossref has a healthy financial situation and we only continue to grow. While we won’t have a clear hierarchical path for staff to follow, there are always evolving opportunities to progress and be challenged.
Thinking of applying?
This position is full time and, as for all Crossref employees, location is flexible. The Crossref team is geographically distributed in Europe and North America and we fully support working from home. It would be good to have a minimum 3-hour overlap with the UTC-0 time zone.
We especially encourage applications from people with backgrounds historically under-represented in research and scholarly communications.
Click here to apply! We ask for your CV, cover letter, and a few quick answer questions as part of the application process. The questions are purely informational and will not determine your candidacy. Please strive to submit your application by October 27th, 2023.
Equal opportunities commitment
Crossref is committed to a policy of non-discrimination and equal opportunity for all employees and qualified applicants for employment without regard to race, colour, religion, sex, pregnancy or a condition related to pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, ancestry, age, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, uniform service member status, or any other protected class under applicable law. Crossref will make reasonable accommodations for qualified iniduals with known disabilities in accordance with applicable law.
Thanks for your interest in joining Crossref. We are excited to hear from you!
