How we work
We use an adapted version of Basecamp's Shape Up approach, which for us means:
- We work in cycles of 5 weeks of focused work and 1 week of cool down.
- We work in product teams, where each team owns the features and execution of certain product areas.
- Each team owns creating "idea pitches" for upcoming cycles, and moving their product ideas along.
- Each 5 week work cycle sees one or more "bets" shipped for each team, each having very specific and well-defined requirements.
- During cool down, each of us chooses what we want to work on, be it bugs, minor features, tech debt, exploring new concepts, and more.
As the Senior Engineering Manager at Whimsical, you'll be contributing by ensuring the well-being of the Engineering team and making sure that any blockers are removed efficiently and problems are being solved. And being a small company means that on rare occasions you may have to roll up your sleeves and help with some code.
In addition to Shape Up, we also occasionally pitch in and do customer support to better understand our users and their needs, regardless of our role within the company.
Our primary mode of operation is asynchronous. We use real-time communication with great care, and only where it makes sense. We use Whimsical, email, Slack, and Zoom for our day-to-day communication.
But we also believe in spending quality time together, which is why we try to bring everyone from around the world together at least twice a year for what we call "Whimsical Summits". At Summits we focus on getting to know each other better and building bonds that help us communicate better when we're apart.
About Whimsical
Whimsical was founded in 2017 by Kaspars Dancis and Steve Schoeffel to help people think and collaborate in the digital-first work environment.
We are a remote-first company and big proponents of remote work because it democratizes the opportunities for people everywhere.
Our operating philosophy is based on set of core principles, such as:
- Sustainability: We don't believe in growth at all costs. Growth is a fundamental part of a healthy existence but we want it to be in balance with sustainability and bounded by ethical behavior. We strive to work calm, 40-hour work weeks. Whimsical is also committed to doing our part towards sustainable future for the planet.
- Craftsmanship: We care deeply about our work. We are specialists, eager learners, and persistent in our pursuit of quality work. We're patient and committed because building great things takes time.
- Long-term focus: We're building Whimsical for the long-haul, not a quick exit. We avoid shortcuts and consider every key decision from a 10+ year perspective.
- Partnership Mindset: We’ve built the company around the idea that everybody who joins us should feel like they are partners in the business. Time is precious and we want Whimsical to be the place where people invest their time rather than sell it. Our equity offers are 100% transparent and above market average. We also pay everyone at the same level the same salary, no matter where they live.

🎅 We hire old (and young)
Location: International, Anywhere; 100% Remote
Hi, my name is Daniël, one of the founders at Monday Merch. Thank you for taking the time to read our open role. I am excited to start and meet a new talent that can join our small team.
Monday Merch is here to disrupt the merchandising market. We help our clients from A-Z in their journey for merch. Our platform and technology is one of our core assets that makes us grow FAST.
For our tech team we are looking for someone to join our small team. We are young, enthusiastic, motivated and eager to disrupt the market.
In this role you will be working on two core systems of our company: our custom-built platform, and our ERP. As you will be one of the first hires in this team, you will be handed a lot of responsibility to make important design choices. You need both high level thinking of processes and future developments, but also a ‘get it done’ mentality to write and maintain code yourself.
A fairly good understanding and working experience with Python/Django is a requirement for this role. Our custom built platform also makes use of Vue-js, so experience with that (or javascript) is a big plus.
Although it is important that the candidate has a fair amount of years of programming experience, we are more interested in your eagerness to learn and achieve success.
WHY WORK AT MONDAY MERCH?
We are a small group of ambitious people that are looking to improve the world of merchandise by the use of technology. At a fast growing, small company, there is enormous opportunity for making impact. Decisions you make today can (and should preferably be) reality tomorrow. Bright minds, opportunistic, curious and making fun: we love to welcome you to our team. You will be joining a team which is still very early in their journey to greatness.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
You need to have:
- 5+y Python experience
- Experience with leading technical initiatives from conception to deployment
- Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal English
- 2y+ Vue-js / Javascript experience
- GIT experience
A real bonus would be:
- Google Cloud experience
- Odoo ERP experience
- Database design experience
- SQL experience
HOW DO WE WORK?
Our team consists of many remote team members (over 30 now in total). We communicate partially synchronously (we usually overlap with our teams for 3/4 hours daily and are free to work on some of the tasks whenever it suits us best). As one of our first hires in the tech team, you would be working closely with me (Daniël) and our other team member to discuss strategy and priorities on a daily basis. Possibly that includes a daily (or less frequent) standup.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?
- Flexible full-time working hours
- A competitive pay in the range of $4K – $5K per month (based on skills and experience)
- Paid national holidays (of the freelancers’ country of residence)
- The opportunity to grow together with the company & take ownership from day 1
INTERESTED?
I would love to get to know you and see if we vibe together. Send me an email to [email protected] and we will schedule a call!

- Bonus points for a sense of humor, empathy, and curiosity.
Compatible time zones
This role is specifically for European time zones, though you can be located in almost any country as long as your time zone is no further west than the UK (GMT+0/BST) and no further east than Germany (GMT+1/GMT+2). We’ve found that when everyone on the team is located in a similar time zone, it’s easier to collaborate and there’s much less pressure to stay up late or get up early, so this is a hard constraint, even if you’re willing to work hours different from your current time zone.
Benefits
Our benefits reflect our values. We believe compensation should be fair, transparent, and generous. We hire Grunts in many countries, so some details may vary.
- Location Independent, Above-Market Salary. To reduce bias and increase transparency, we compute all salaries using formulas. The formula factors in your title and uses a multiplier to produce a result that’s above market for that title. Our salaries are location independent.
- Equity. To reduce bias and increase transparency, we compute all stock grants using formulas. The formula for equity factors in your title and your employee number. Moreover, we offer a Change in Control Bonus Plan, inspired by Progressive Equity, where if there is a large exit event, employees end up with a larger portion of the proceeds (rather than the founders hogging it all).
- Profit-Sharing Bonus. We set aside a pot of money at the end of each year based on profits and distribute bonuses according to a formula that uses as inputs your level within the company and the length of your tenure at the company.
- Hardware Budget. We’ll buy you a brand new 16″ Apple MacBook Pro (or other computer of your choosing of equivalent value) upon joining. It will be owned by you, not the company.
- Personal Budget. We’ll give you a personal budget of $1,000 USD per month to spend on your workspace (e.g., a co-working space), health (e.g., gym, yoga), time (e.g., babysitter), and/or learning (e.g., books, courses).
- Minimum Vacation Policy. We require that you take at least 4 weeks of vacation per year; take more, if needed.
- Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance. We offer a range of high-quality plans with a large portion paid by the company. For countries other than the US, this includes extra coverage on top of your statutory insurance.
