Senior Software Engineer, Deals
REMOTE
ENGINEERING
FULL-TIME
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Deals team, you will “deal” in all things deals. Our deals pipeline is the beating heart of Scott’s Cheap Flights. We process billions of records from various sources daily to curate only the best flight deals for our members. The Deals team is constantly improving our data ingestion systems to keep deal data flowing across the engineering organization. You will be responsible for maintaining and improving the backend services that comprise our deals ecosystem.
Check out our SCF 2022 Wrapped to see our top five deals from this year along with the total number of deals we’ve sent out!
In the short term, you will:
- Become familiar with our code bases, code style, tech stack, development and deployment process, and project management process
- Contribute to the system architecture and design process
- Give direction and oversight to junior engineers on implementation of the system designs you helped develop as well as being an inidual contributor in the execution
- Work with a cross-functional team to support development of new features
- Refactor, QA, and improve existing code
- Write and maintain robust tests to ensure the stability of our backend systems
In the long term, you will:
- Be an expert with all of our tooling: Bugsnag, Metabase, Heroku, New Relic, and more
- Bring creative solutions to projects to support the continual improvement of Scott’s Cheap Flights
- Contribute to scaling our Deals pipeline and data ecosystem to enable machine learning capabilities
- Cultivate relationships across engineering teams within SCF so that we continue to build a highly collaborative environment
- Continue education/training. Everyone should be working in some way at all times towards the next step in their career
- Mentor all engineers on the team and make your experience a valuable resource to everyone
What you bring to the table:
- High autonomy: We don’t like being micromanaged, and we don’t like micromanaging others. Leading developers are those we trust to do what is right without leadership stepping in. You’ve demonstrated that you can accomplish complex tasks you’re assigned without hands-on oversight and direction.
- Intellectual curiosity: You are motivated to try new methods and learn new technologies without direction to do so. You are always thinking of ways to improve existing systems or build better ones.
- Great attention to detail: You have a nose for edge cases and can anticipate potential snags when discussing technical solutions.
- Balance of refinement and pragmatism: We will lean on you to know when to dial in the perfect abstraction vs shipping simple, working code.
- Excellent communication skills: We are a fully remote company that relies heavily on async communication. Staying tuned-in to our communications channels will be integral to your success here.
- Resourcefulness: You lean on your experience to drive you to an optimal solution. When you don’t know how to solve a problem, you know how to comprehensively research to find the solution. You are the person that people talk to when they can’t figure something out.
- Resilience: No one is perfect. You’ve made some mistakes, but you can acknowledge your failures and take full responsibility for them. By making mistakes, you’ve learned to avoid pitfalls and make architectural decisions that allow you to maneuver through challenges of uncertainty and complexity. You demonstrate and promote a culture of accountability and learning, not a culture of blame.

< class="h2">Jooble's product from the technological perspectiveOur website is built upon microservices architecture. We use the latest versions of .NET and ASP.NET Core to create new services and applications. Message queuing with RabbitMQ allows transferring data between services and applications in the most effective way. To improve application performance, we implement caching using Redis. Our main front-end framework is react.js. To balance the load across multiple site instances, we use NGINX. In a bundle with Consul, NGINX balances the traffic among several microservices instances according to setup configurations.
Massive volumes of data are stored in numerous MSSQL and PostgreSQL relational databases. Since our website is a search engine, we use Elasticsearch to access data quickly. Along with Elasticsearch, we use other instruments of Elastic Stack. For example, Logstash and Kibana allow keeping an eye on error logs of our software.Together with DevOps, our Developers implement the best CI/CD practices using GitLab and Jenkins. Using Prometheus, we gather performance metrics of our services and applications and then visualize them on Grafana dashboards. < class="h2">Development culture at JoobleAt Jooble, we strive to create high-quality code. We regularly conduct Tech talks where we share knowledge on implementing new development approaches and solving challenging engineering issues. And on Product Sprint Demos, we sync on the overall progress of the whole product. Skynova has 60,000 happy customers, is bootstrapped and debt free! What a joy these days :-) But what are we doing? Skynova (https://www.skynova.com) provides online invoicing, accounting and 30+ other business modules to self-employed and small businesses. Our main focus is on the US, but we have customers from around 100 countries. Our customers are very happy: The service is easy to use and they get a good selection of tools that they can combine to fit their specific needs - all at a very competitive price point.
We were founded more than 10 years ago, but we think this is just the beginning! We have a long list of new modules to create, modules to improve, core systems to refactor, experiments to run, data crunching and page loads to speed up and more. The more we work on this, the more we think of - and our customers have some ideas as well :-)
To step up our efforts, we are now looking for three Senior PHP Developers to work on all of the above! These are fully remote positions, so autonomy and independence would be required. Even though the positions are fully remote, we don’t want to be fully isolated, though, and collaboration is necessary. We collaborate using git, jira, e-mail, google meet and more. In addition you’ll be invited to occasional meet-ups at the office in Oslo, Norway.
There are in total 9 people working here, four in the US and five in Europe, but we are now in the process of scaling up.
As a Senior PHP Developer you’ll be working directly with the founder/technical lead as well as head of product and others in the company - depending on what needs to be done.
Our stack is the LAMP stack; we use MVC and are moving towards a modular monolith. We don’t use micro-services, Kubernetes or complex cloud offerings. We try to keep things as simple and stable as possible. Boring tech has fewer bugs and require less maintenance which also equals happy developers.
Main responsibilities:
- Code new modules and improve existing ones
- Fix bugs
- Refactor the core system
- Speed things up
- Test your own code
Requirements:
- 5+ years as a PHP developer
- Experience with web/saas applications
- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent English skills
- Ability to work both independently and in a team
We offer:
- Stable, long-term contract
- Fully remote (with occasional meet-ups)
- Flexible working hours
- Interesting, erse projects
- High degree of independence and impact
If you have any questions, feel free to ask about anything you want. When applying, please include both a cover letter and a resume/CV. We look forward to hearing from you!
