Senior Software Engineer (Ruby on Rails)
Two Barrels is hiring Senior Software Engineers specializing in Ruby on Rails for $185,000/year. You will be a traditional company employee. This is a full time 40 hour/week position with company benefits. This is a remote position. Our main office is in Spokane WA, and we have satellite offices in Austin TX and Salt Lake City UT.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be given large projects and be expected to break these projects into medium-sized tasks for our Software Engineers, all while maintaining focus on the big picture goals and projects. You will have the opportunity to make a direct impact on architecture design. You’ll get to work with a team of engineers who like to do things the right way versus plowing through just to meet a goal. We have no investors or micro-managed goals. We just want to make high-end software that is easy to continually improve.
You can expect a erse team with different backgrounds, experience and identities. You will have current members of the team eager to help you get up to speed as quickly as possible. Solid fundamentals with software, teamwork, systems, and troubleshooting will pave the way.
What’s in a title?
Here at Two Barrels we don’t take titles very seriously. We know for recruiting purposes we need to call our jobs something, so we started with labeling and differentiating them in a fairly traditional way with junior, mid, senior. However, we’ve realized that was putting our employees in a box and wasn’t allowing us to uniquely identify their inidual contributions, strengths and professional goals. Once you join our team the titles kinda get dropped as we expect everyone to work with everyone regardless of title or experience. We have taken the approach of evaluating candidates and employees on a level basis. It makes it a little easier internally to talk about growing into the next level without there being this huge chasm between what it means to be a Junior Engineer vs. a Mid Engineer. Our levels have expectations set for each one and it’s the responsibility of the manager and employee to make sure there is alignment. We do this through quarterly conversations where we discuss employee progression, if the work is challenging, and to ensure they feel fairly compensated for their work and expertise. Basically, levels gives us more flexibility to help people grow in their careers. But sure, you can post your title on LinkedIn as what makes sense to the rest of the world.

Remote | Spokane Austin SLC |
Duration:
Full Time
Wage:
$185,000/year
Responsibilities:
- Be a good human
- Treat your co-workers with respect
- Have a Growth Mindset, not a Fixed Mindset

- Design, implement, document, and maintain front and back end systems for high-traffic applications
- Help peel off monolith code into well-organized architecture
- Help drive technical standards for the team
- Design and implement novel systems from scratch, from billing to all kinds of crazy ideas we come up with
- Help us set a high bar for quality, from code and systems to how we treat each other
- Take substantial features from concept to shipping
- Provide material feedback on the work of junior and mid-level programmers
- Monitor and ensure automated processes run as expected
- Perform routine automation assignments with minimum supervision
- Communicate consistently with stakeholders, managers, and other teams about releases
- Participate in the training or development of others, as directed
- Be willing to learn, grow, and help all of us continually get better at what we do
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or other equivalent degree/experience
- Minimum of 6 years full stack application development, software test automation experience, and object oriented development

Preferred Qualifications:
- High level of ability coding in Ruby and expert level familiarity with the Rails framework
- Experience with large Rails/Rack- based applications
Why you might like this job:
You’ve been building large rails apps for other companies. The ones with carrots dangling in front of you, hipster benefits and slippery ladders. You’ve always wondered if there’s a place where profits and titles aren’t everyone’s motivation. Where people just want you to make great software. You like the idea of working for a locally-owned and operated company that competes in an extremely competitive space nationwide. You like that your work matters today and will affect millions of our business customers.
You like the idea that you could find a place like this in Spokane, where we have 4 seasons. Where you can buy a great house for a great price with no epic commute. You like that there are 5 ski hills within 2 hours and endless outdoor activities. You don’t like bugs or humidity or a million people living in your city.
You love to code, but you want to take part in the planning without being required to deal with stakeholders and project managers all day. You want to make cool stuff. You want your cool stuff to be really good. But most importantly, if you made a dish of noodles and butter for someone and asked them what they thought of it, if they said it was okay or good and didn’t give you feedback, you’d feel a little left out you’d want a little more because okay or good isn’t fulfilling to you.
But at the same time it’s just a job. Yourself/Family/Friends/Personal Time is number 1. Work is number 2 or 3. Our goal is to use the incredible business we are excited to be a part of to support all of our personal time. We all want to live a full personal life. We’ll have more fun working together during the day if we know there’s a clear cutoff. This way, we can create a work environment where we can not only go home at the end of the day, but mentally shut off work and mentally go home also. We focus on creating a welcoming, supportive job environment that pays well and doesn’t stress you out, so when you call it a day, you go have fun personally.
Benefits:
- Great Wage
- WFH comfort package
- 22 days paid time off (29 days after 3 years. Flexible time off after 5 years!)
- 4% retirement matching through a Charles Schwab 401(k)
- 100% employer-paid medical, dental and vision for employees
- Maternity and Paternity Leave
- Flexible hours
- Coffee shop next door
- Crappy parking? Oh, I mean a cool downtown location for easy public transportation options

Who We Are
We’re ElevenYellow, a software laboratory for high risk/high reward ideas. We believe in a different way of work and play. We’re a software development studio that’s been launching dozens of SaaS products 100% remotely, from social media to AI art, since 2013.
The “we” is a team of 30+ people scattered across 15 countries, from Singapore to Chile, passing through Amsterdam. Most of us are based in Spain and Portugal though.
We are capitalists about how we make money and collectivists about what to do with it. When something works, most of the resources are used to keep everything afloat.
Most people that joined ElevenYellow have never left.
Who We Are Looking For
We’re looking for junior developer(s) who want to keep learning and building interesting new projects with the latest technologies with us.
The ideal profile we are looking for is someone who can present their own extracurricular tech projects.
How We Work
We create bootstrapped software that operates in areas with more risk than average, using as little resources as possible.
We never use external capital, so our resources are always at play. This forces us to be scrappy and smart about what we build and how we build it.
We don’t like to play by Silicon Valley’s rules - we like the kind of businesses that no one has heard of, that don’t raise mega rounds and don’t make noise.
We look for outsized returns in areas where most players would be cautious to invest in. Our most recent project is Botto.com, a decentralized autonomous artist.
ElevenYellow Games
Every six months we have our Winter or Summer games - a hackathon where all the company gets together to build quick 1-week projects. In our last hackathon we’ve built 6 new projects amongst which are:
- Morelli.ai: a tool that checks images if they are human made or AI-generated
- Whop.ai: tweet generator that optimizes tweets for engagement
- Viewing.co: an automated and AI-powered content network
We support our way of living and working by collaborating with places such as Anceu Coliving in Galicia, Spain.
All members of ElevenYellow have a possibility to spend a month in Anceu or in our clubhouse in Lisbon. Most of our team met up in these two places to build the hackathon projects.
Our tech & day-to-day work
- We like working with Javascript, Typescript, MySQL, MongoDB and Redis
- We use frameworks like Meteor.js and Next.js where we feel comfortable, but we are always open to trying new technologies.
- We predominantly communicate over Slack, making little use of email internally. Github is our repo of choice and we track progress via weekly calls that last approximately 20 minutes.
- We encourage discussion and debate, but place tremendous value on pragmatism and optimizing for output.
You are a great fit if:
- You are a talented, motivated person, interested in Blockchain, AI, and the newest technologies in general
- You have explored new technologies and built projects of your own while studying
- You take ownership of your work
- You have creative problem solving skills with analytical mindset
Our perks
- Work Remotely
- Annual Retreats
- Competitive Salary (remuneration depends on experience. Generally speaking, we pay juniors $1800-$2500/month)
- Coworking (monthly, up to $200)
- Health Insurance Coverage (monthly, up to $200)
- Self Improvement Budget (monthly, up to $80)
- Gym Membership (Monthly, up to $80)
Now, here’s what you need to do:
- Send an email to [email protected]
- Mention why you think you’re a good fit for us
- Describe your academic/work highlights (highs and lows, best/worst projects, etc)
- Add your portfolio / things that you think define your work
- LinkedIn / CV stuff if you think it’s necessary
We believe applications should be human and conversational. We’d mostly appreciate it if you told us who you were and what you wanted to do in life, both personally and professionally. Of course, please only disclose what you’re comfortable with. And not to forget! We’re an equal opportunity employer and we encourage everyone to apply. We respect genders, ethnicities, boundaries, friendships, and the human aspect of work.

Software Engineer – Code Intelligence
at Sourcegraph (View all jobs)
Remote
ALL SOURCEGRAPH ROLES ARE FULLY REMOTE
Who we are
Our mission at Sourcegraph is to make it so that everyone can code, not just ~0.1% of the population. Our code intelligence platform helps developers and companies with billions of lines of code create the software you use every day. By enabling more people to code, we believe we will create economic opportunity across the world and will drive progress that benefits everyone.
It’s an exciting time to join Sourcegraph. Our business is growing rapidly: we’ve experienced exponential growth and our $125M Series D from Andreessen Horowitz and $50M Series C from Sequoia have given us the opportunity to make big ambitious bets on our future. We have a huge market (every company that builds software) and massive opportunity (most developers haven’t even heard of code intelligence yet, but once you’ve used it, you can’t live without it–just like Google). By continuing to hire exceptional people, we have the opportunity to make Sourcegraph one of the biggest technology companies in the world.
Working hours
Given that we are an all-remote company and hire almost anywhere in the world, we don’t have a location requirement for this role. However, your working hours must overlap with EST for at least 10 hours/week.
Why this job is exciting
The Code Intelligence team is building compiler-accurate cross-repository IDE level navigation in multiple languages, with an in-house focus on the JVM/C++/.NET/JS/Go/Ruby/Python/Rust ecosystems. Our go to definition and find references functionality helps engineers understand and navigate their code and dependencies as quickly as possible. Teams and product verticals within Sourcegraph are able to use Code Intelligence data to enhance or provide a deep technical moat to their offerings. Through this foundation many exciting avenues and innovations are spawned (dependency graph, global monorepo, security use cases, IDE navigation without local compilation).
Our vision is to expand and support 40+ programming languages and build the global graph of open source code. We believe that we’re only just scratching the surface of what is possible within Code Intelligence.
As a software engineer, you’ll iterate on our customer experience, improve our language specific tooling and be an influential part of helping us build the global graph of code.
Join us to bring IDE-like navigation to 40+ programming languages. As part of this team, you’ll have the opportunity to specialize as we grow. From creating intuitive language specific tooling through to working on low level compiler plugins, scaling our API with terabytes of data and launching innovative features.
Within one month, you will
- Be actively contributing to one of our supported language indexers.
- Work closely with your teammates to understand the technical rationale behind our indexing format SCIP.
Within three months, you will
- Directly be owning the development or maintenance of a SCIP language indexer. Collaborate with engineers on different teams, and sometimes with our customers, to define the ideal APIs needed to deliver on the desired user experience.
- Actively shape the direction and participate in the planning of the features we’re going to build, e.g. by writing and reviewing PR-FAQs.
Within six months, you will
- Driving significant features such as cross-language precise navigation, dependency graph analysis or auto-inference of how to build and compile customer projects automatically.
- Evangelize and iterate on the SCIP protocol, our docs and community contributions to drive SCIP forward as a global standard.
- Make a significant impact by being a key contributor and help us improve our existing engineering practices.
- Feel confident working more autonomously, leaning into our values, especially customer-driven, teamwork and high agency.
About you
You are an experienced and visionary customer-driven software engineer who works from a place of compassion and curiosity. You find joy in solving complex problems in the code intelligence space. You are strongly aligned with our values, inspired by our mission to make it so that everyone can code, and motivated to do your best work at Sourcegraph.
Qualifications:
- Strong experience developing and maintaining language tooling, such as compilers, build tools, static/semantic analysis or language servers.
- Deep knowledge in at least one language ecosystem of JVM/.NET or C++.
- Ability to work effectively across multiple languages with and without prior experience.
- You can communicate clearly and empathetically, especially in writing and documentation.
- You have experience creating high quality software balanced with a pragmatic understanding of how to make appropriate tradeoffs.
- You are customer-oriented and a relationship builder.
- You share our values, and work in accordance with those values.
Level
This job is an IC5. You can read more about our job leveling philosophy in our Handbook.
Compensation
We pay you an above-average salary because we want to hire the best people who are fully focused on helping Sourcegraph succeed, not worried about paying bills. You will have the flexibility to work and live anywhere in the world (unless specified otherwise in the job description), and we’ll never take your location or current/past salary information into account when determining your compensation. As an open and transparent company that values equitable and competitive compensation for everyone, we are working hard to make our compensation ranges visible across the board. To determine your salary, we use a number of market and data-driven salary sources and target the high-end of the range, ensuring that we’re always paying above market regardless of where you live.
The target compensation for this role is $225,000 USD base.
In addition to our cash compensation, we offer equity (because when we succeed as a company, we want you to succeed, too) and generous perks & benefits.

At 8returns, we're transforming one of the most frustrating, environmentally damaging and costly aspects of e-commerce — returns. We built a technology that automates the returns process for retailers and makes data-driven decisions to connect each return to its next best use.
We're still in the scrappy startup phase, so we are looking for people who are comfortable with ambiguity and having wide impact. We've been remote-first since Day 1, and care a ton about communication, autonomy, curiosity, and initiative.
We have happy paying customers and just raised our first round of funding from industry leaders. Our team is highly experienced, and has started, scaled and sold companies before. We also love learning from each other, and are looking for people who bring a new set of experiences and backgrounds to our team.
**
Who you are**- You worked remotely before, or know that you'd work well with a remote team.
- Ability to think creatively and critically and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and often ambiguous work environment
- 3+ years of experience developing high performance web applications
- If you want to focus on frontend, experience with React is a big plus
- If you want to focus on backend, strong knowledge of Ruby on Rails and experience designing maintainable systems, APIs, and integrations are great
- You are able to decide what aspects of products need to be perfected and when to cut corners to ship faster
The main app is built with Ruby on Rails and React. We use Postgres, Heroku, AWS. While previous experience with these technologies is a plus, we’re looking for someone with broad experience.
**
Why you might be excited about us**- We're working to solve a massive global problem - 10 billion pounds of returns end up in landfills every year and for retailers it’s a trillion-dollar problem.
- We're small, so you'll be able to contribute efficiently and without bureaucracy. You'll quickly have responsibility over big areas of our product. You'll also help build our company's culture.
- We don't have a ton of meetings. If we can effectively solve a problem asynchronously, we do. When we do meet synchronously, you'll always have the opportunity to contribute.
- You'll be able to work remotely and set your own schedule. We don't micro-manage and will help you do great work. Most of our engineers work EU hours, but organize their work day to be whatever's best for them.
- We will mold your role to shape a career you're excited about. We care a ton about your satisfaction and job happiness, and will help prep you for whatever you're looking for in the future.
- We work hard and also highly value balanced work/life. We care about family and your own personal development, and don't expect for you to be always engaged with work.
Why you might not be excited about us
- We're small (~10 people in the company now), so if you like more established companies, it's not (yet) the right time. Since we're an early stage startup, projects and priorities may shift.
- Our customers love us, and there's a lot we can improve. It's a great place to be, but means there's some technical debt.
- We can't (yet) provide close mentorship for junior developers, especially as we're remote and small. As we grow, we'll get a lot better at this.
- Since you'll have a lot of responsibility and creativity over projects, they may not be defined perfectly initially. You'll be expected to bring your own experience and perspective to help us do the right things, and raise flags if you think we should do things differently.
If we think you might be a good fit, we'll respond within 48 hours.

What is LoanCrate? We started LoanCrate to make home-buying simpler and less expensive for lenders and borrowers (us!). Today, mortgage lenders are stuck running their companies on software products built 20 years ago. These products are slow and unstable, and end up costing lenders millions of dollars in other otherwise preventable mistakes every year. LoanCrate solves those problems and more, helping lenders improve the home-buying experience for people all over the country.Since starting in January 2021, our remote team has raised $9m, grown to 13 people, and launched our first product. And since adopting LoanCrate in June '21, our customers have used LoanCrate to power >$42b in new home loans. As a company, we're on track to be cash-flow positive in 2023.Our team is a group of people excited to tackle the complexity of the home-lending industry. We care about collaboration, very open communication covering the good & the bad so that we learn from our decisions quickly, and ultimately having fun while we're building. You'll fit in well if you like ing deep quickly! The opportunityOur dreams are big and we have much to build! We're looking for senior software engineers to help lead our team in powering the future of home buying in the US (which could entail managing a majority of US home loans every year — financial assets worth trillions of dollars). We are excited to offer competitive salary and equity for this role. What to expectAs an engineer at LoanCrate, you'll continue our team tradition by shipping code to production on your first day! Following that, within your first month, you'll e into your first mission-critical project, such as...🙈 Architecting, building, and launching v2 of our no-code platform that our customers use to digitize their ops workflows and save millions of dollars per year.🤝 Integrating with 3rd-party providers of lending services APIs to generate documents/disclosures, produce automated underwriting results, or prevent fraud.🏗 Architecting, building, and launching the next generation of our job processing infrastructure on AWS to make LoanCrate's back end more observable and reliable.Tech stackNearly all of our code is written in TypeScript. We use React on the frontend, Node/Express on the backend (running inside Docker), GraphQL/Apollo on both sides, and Postgres as our database. We use AWS (ECS, RDS, ElastiCache, SNS, and more) and manage all of our infrastructure with Terraform. We believe that high engineering velocity drives high product velocity (and, in turn, our success as a company 😄). Keeping this in mind, we've invested heavily in creating a great developer experience that enables engineers to ship fast. Some highlights of our stack:↔️ End-to-End Type Safety - We generate TypeScript types from our Postgres and GraphQL schemas so that when we change our database schema we see type errors in any incompatible frontend React components.🌎 Full-Stack Code Sharing - Our build tooling supports seamless sharing of TypeScript files between the client, server, and other packages in our mono-repo so that we never have to define functions or configuration values twice.🏠 Reproducible Infrastructure - We’ve used Terraform to manage 100% of our infrastructure since day 1 and have configured our CI pipeline to automatically deploy temporary staging environments for every pull request. We use these per-PR environments to get feedback from teammates and test any infrastructure changes using infrastructure that's identical to production.🧪 First Class Testing Utilities - We have a comprehensive library of utilities that mock production-like data and feed automated end-to-end, integration, and performance tests. Our wide-ranging test suite allows us to move fast while maintaining nearly perfect uptime.Preferred skills and background(It's okay not to have all of these things - these are just some skills we are excited about!)🔒 A constant and keen eye for security risks — we store and display some of people's most sensitive personal data and need to keep it safe!🎨 A desire to be product-oriented, from thinking through the product implications of what you're building to contributing your unique ideas of how to improve the product.🏙️ Ability to develop readable, maintainable, and effective software architecture patterns that support use of our product by various enterprise customers (each with thousands of employees and their own methods for running their companies).👩🏫👨🏫 Excitement to mentor less senior engineers in both hard and soft skills.🚈 SRE-oriented mindset for developing infrastructure that's reliable, observable, and requires minimal toil to maintain.🌩️ Experience scaling high-throughput distributed systems in the cloud. Bonus points if you're experienced with infrastructure-as-code solutions like Terraform or CloudFormation!🔧 Ability to develop full-stack web app features from design through deployment.🛢️ Experience designing and scaling complex relational DB schemas, as well as figuring out performant ways to store, retrieve, and update such data. Home loans have thousands of data fields 🙃. Please mention the word PRECISE when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMjYwMDozYzAxOjpmMDNjOjkyZmY6ZmUyMzo0NDNm).
