Title: Embedded Software Engineer
Location: Home based – Worldwide
This role is one of our general tracks. Apply here for all engineering teams at Canonical who work on low-level system technology and embedded systems, across all seniority levels.
We hire careful and conscientious engineers who appreciate the challenge of memory, performance, battery and connectivity constrained code that has to work every time in an unreliable and unforgiving world, on x86, ARM or RISC-V silicon.
Canonical Ubuntu is the leading Linux for software engineers, desktops, cloud and IoT. We bring open source to the world as a high-performance, safe and secure platform for enterprise computing, software engineering, and connected devices.
These smart, connected devices have the potential to transform every industry. Classic Ubuntu desktop or server is widely used in embedded systems because of its developer focus and enterprise grade security maintenance. We partner with the world’s most prominent silicon companies to optimise Ubuntu on their latest and greatest chips, as well as with major OEMs and ODMs (PC, servers and connected device manufacturers) to ensure that Ubuntu works perfectly on their hardware.
But while classic, deb’ based Ubuntu is ideal for developers, it has too much variability for appliance or connected device environments, where you want to know *exactly* what the state of millions or billions of devices might be. So Canonical builds Ubuntu Core, a fully containerised version of Ubuntu that is mathematically precise and rigorously secure. We are working on additional solutions for even smaller devices.
We have several teams that focus on open source for embedded environments. We hire outstanding Linux and RTOS software engineers with a passion for open source, innovation, cutting-edge hardware and software technologies in general. You will be expected to make significant contributions through high-quality design and code, and to develop your technical leadership.
These roles include:
- Ubuntu Core and snapd software development
- Silicon software and optimisation engineers
- Kernel driver and hardware enablement engineers
- Hardware-centric Linux QA Engineers
- Hardware Certification Engineers
- Robotics engineers
- Industrial IoT software engineers
- Networking software engineers (switching, routing, access and SmartNICs)
At Canonical you will have the opportunity to engage with the broader open source community. We’re looking for iniduals who can help build a thriving community, contribute to a broad range of technologies, and contribute to the deployment of Ubuntu and Ubuntu Core across the widest range of devices.
Location: we have remote roles open in every time zone.
What your day will look like
Based on the first round of interviews we identify specific teams where you might be an excellent fit, and conduct second round interviews with those teams. Our engineers:
- Work with the latest Linux kernel, RTOS, and open source technologies
- Deliver Ubuntu for the latest IoT and server-class hardware platforms
- Integrate and maintain device-oriented software stacks
- Write high-quality, well-designed software
- Collaborate proactively with other globally distributed teams
- Display technical leadership internally and within our external communities
- Help our customers ship their apps and SDKs on Ubuntu
- Build device OS images with Ubuntu Core, Desktop and Server
- Optimise the Ubuntu kernel and libraries for silicon-specific capabilities
- Debug issues and produce high-quality code to fix them
- Contribute to technical documentation to make it the best of its kind
- Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding good solutions
- Participate as technical lead on complex customer engagements involving complete system architectures from cloud to edge
- Work usually from home, with global travel 2 to 4 weeks for company events
What we are looking for in you
- An exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
- Drive and a track record of going above-and-beyond expectations
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about your alternative path
- Passion for embedded systems software (e.g. kernel, graphics, Yocto, RTOS)
- Fluency in at least one of Golang, C, C++, or Rust
- Professional written and spoken English
- Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
- Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability
- Passion, thoughtfulness, and self-motivation
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments
- Ability to travel twice a year, for company events up to two weeks each
Additional skills that you might also bring
- Experience with Debian/Ubuntu or other distro packaging
- Understanding of build systems and toolchains, including for cross-compilation
- Experience with firmware, uboot, UEFI, ACPI, DSDT, or boot loaders
- Experience with power management on PCI ASPM, SATA ALPM, low power profiles
- Computer architecture knowledge of x86, ARM, RISC-V
- Experience in board design, bring up, and validation
- Experience with electrical engineering design tools (e.g. schematic capture, layout)
- Familiarity with Ubuntu development model
- Performance engineering and security experience
- Shell or Python scripting skills
What we offer you
We consider geographical location, experience, and performance in shaping compensation worldwide. We revisit compensation annually (and more often for graduates and associates) to ensure we recognise outstanding performance. In addition to base pay, we offer a performance-driven annual bonus. We provide all team members with additional benefits, which reflect our values and ideals. We balance our programs to meet local needs and ensure fairness globally.
- Distributed work environment with twice-yearly team sprints in person
- Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year
- Annual compensation review
- Recognition rewards
- Annual holiday leave
- Maternity and paternity leave
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Opportunity to travel to new locations to meet colleagues

"G2i totally changed my life. My quality of life is way, way better. I get less stressed. I get less sick. I have more hours in my day to give attention to my family. I'm really thankful for working with them.” - Tiago Souto
Tiago is proof that vacancies you see at G2i are filled with healthy and happy devs – which means this could not only be your next job, but the one after that as well.
You probably want to know what’s involved.
If you’ve been a freelance Ruby Developer for years, you know what it takes. It’s all about shipping an awesome product. Keep your tech lead happy. Keep the clients happy. All thanks to your production ready code, clear documentation, AND top notch communication skills.
You’ll work 100% remotely with US clients. Take your pick of clients from cutting-edge FinTech and Crypto to traditional HR SaaS, with plenty of choices in between. And since it’s a contracting position, once you finish a project you can easily move to the next one that floats your boat. We’ve got quite a few G2i alums who’ve stayed with us for several years doing just that.
Team sizes vary with each client but don’t worry, you’ll never be alone. We’ve got a really tight community of 800+ engineers on Slack that you can ask for help if you need it. You’ll also have a direct line to our Developer Success Team whose job is to have your back.
Typical assignments are 32-40 hours per week, where you can bill $80-90 per hour. If you’re a stickler for detail, you might want to know that you’ll be working with technologies like Ruby, Rails, React, GraphQL, Typescript and popular deployment tools.
G2i is the first hiring platform that focuses on developer health, which explains why we have plenty of opportunities for you to explore. We've seen burnout all too often in tech and we are on a mission to push back against it. We believe in maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and act on those beliefs by:
— developing NFL-like support to aid burnout recovery,
— launching the Developer Health Fund, and
— literally writing the book on developer burnout prevention with our Developer Health OS.
Just click “Apply”. The next steps would be a one-off coding challenge, followed by a chat with our talent team.

Company Overview
Roadie is improving developer effectiveness in engineering organizations across the globe. By helping companies adopt and use Backstage, the open-source developer portal and service catalog developed at Spotify, we are making developers' lives easier and more productive.
We believe we’re at an inflection point where we can build a huge company if we make the correct choices now. We grew revenue by 10x in 2022 and have similar momentum in 2023. The work you do will directly impact that forward progress.
We are a fully remote, seed stage startup, backed by some of the best investors in the DevTools ecosystem. From developer-first VC firms like Boldstart, to inidual angels like Guy Podjarny - the founder of developer focused security company Snyk, and Adam Gross, the ex-CEO of Heroku.
Though our company is young and has grown quickly, we have maintained a tight-knit culture and way of working even though we’re spread across 7 different European countries.
We aim to create a company culture where inidual employees are empowered and trusted to do their best work. We are focused on collaboration, learning, and community conscientiousness.
About the position
You will get to work on some exciting new Roadie features we have in the pipeline, leading on the design of thoughtful UIs for them and lending your experience to the rest of the team in a collaborative way.
You’ll get to interact daily with our customers who are other developers like us at a broad range of companies like Snyk and Netlify, and will have support and freedom to conduct user testing with them, as well as seeing their reaction to your work and iterating on their feedback.
Our codebase is largely modeled around the open source Backstage project which leverages a decoupled plugin architecture alongside an appropriate level of reusability. This allows for new features to be developed in an independent way and for good design principles to be applied from the start.
We have a highly pragmatic workflow that emphasizes daily collaboration via Slack and Hangouts over rituals and unnecessary meetings. We deploy new versions of our product multiple times a day and look to work on small vertical slices that provide some value over big waterfall feature development.
We are looking for remote candidates residing in timezones UTC-2 to UTC+3.
Our Ideal Candidate
A design focused engineer confident in creating carefully thought through UI designs that consider the user and business requirements, who can then implement their designs with clean code using React and Typescript.
You are experienced and passionate about good UX and UI design.
You are confident in leading a design process to assess and implement UX solutions to problems.
You are experienced in design systems, building components and reviewing designs.
You take a collaborative approach to design and implementation and are a skilled facilitator.
You ask thoughtful questions more than you present opinions.
You always look to use metrics and user research to inform decision making where possible.
You start tasks by considering assumptions and problems, not solutions.
You understand the cost benefit analysis of testing in a mature way and prioritize it where appropriate over delivery speed.
The Process
A relaxed introductory chat with an engineer from the team. (20 minutes)
A technical pairing interview with two engineers from the team (1hr)
A culture interview with our CEO and an engineer. (1hr)
A decision
What we’re offering
This is an excellent opportunity to join a fast-growing venture-backed start-up that is building in a whole new market.

**About the Job
**We are looking for a few amazing software developers to join our globally remote team at Cliniko. Cliniko is a web application, comprising Ruby on Rails in the backend, and we’re in the process of transitioning the frontend to a React stack. This role will need to work with both backend and frontend, with more of a focus on the backend. Experience in Ruby is a bonus, but not required.
**What is Cliniko?
**Cliniko is practice management software that makes life easy for allied health professionals by handling appointment scheduling, storing treatment notes, running video consultations, and much more. The software is used globally by tens of thousands of practitioners every day.
Behind Cliniko is a team of 50 people, spread around the world. We work completely remotely, although our base is in Melbourne, Australia. We care more about finding the best person for the job than looking for someone that lives nearby.
We don't have managers, we almost never have meetings, and there are no time sheets to complete. We're responsible, autonomous, creative, and proactive in doing our best for our customers. We're focused on making great software and we take pride in doing good work. It’s also important to us that we have a positive impact on the world.
If you want to know more about how we work, our founder, Joel, gave a talk about it.
**What you’ll work on
**You will spend your time developing Cliniko. Some of the things you’ll do are:
- Adding new features to Cliniko.
- Improving existing features.
- Fixing bugs.
- Refactoring code.
- Reviewing code written by other developers.
- Making Cliniko faster.
- Improving security.
- Resolving issues for customers.
- Assisting the support team with queries.
- Testing and deploying your own code.
- Anything else you think needs doing.
Basically, you’ll be doing all you can to make Cliniko better for our customers.
**About you
**You are someone who loves to code, and cares about having code that is easy to understand. You’re passionate about your work having a positive impact. You want to learn and share what you know.
Taking initiative, and being responsible come naturally to you. You want your code meticulously reviewed, so that you can improve it. You also enjoy doing the same in return. You enjoy working with a team, but you are driven and motivated to take control of your projects, and deliver your own code.
You understand the importance of security practices in your development. You write tests because they matter, not just to achieve coverage.
You’re comfortable working from the database through to the DOM. This includes:
- Relational databases.
- Queues and caches.
- Server side web frameworks.
- JSON APIs.
- Client side JS.
You're either proficient in all of these, or extremely capable in a few. We use Ruby on Rails. Experience with it is not required, but similar experience and an ability to quickly come up to speed is.
No matter what your background is, or how you identify, if you feel you meet the requirements, we encourage you to apply. We know that having a erse team brings the benefit of different perspectives, and it's how we’ll continue to find new ways to make Cliniko better. We are committed to the continual ersification of the team and working to constantly improve our inclusivity which is crucial to how we work.
**How we work
**Here are some things we do a little differently to enable people to do their best work and live a happy life:
- 30-hour work week, full-time pay.
- Flexible hours, choose when you work
- Work from anywhere.
- Unlimited annual leave (minimum 4 weeks per year).
- Supplied computer equipment.
- Ergonomic furniture.
- Fresh organic fruit delivered weekly to your home.
- Overseas trips for full team meet-ups (family invited and paid for, too).
- No managers.
- No meetings.
**How to apply
**Read the instructions thoroughly on the application page.
Job applications close**25th of October, 2023**.
**What you can expect after applying
**Once you’ve applied, sit back and relax while we get to work on our side! We’ll be reviewing all the applications as they come in, and we’ll get back to you at latest, a week after applications close. Everyone will hear back from us, successful or not.
If we select you for the next stage, it will be a short 5 minute chat with our founder, Joel. Following the chat, if you’re still a contender, there’ll be a technical task to complete. These tasks are paid.
Lastly, you’d meet with a few from our team, and we’ll make the final decision. This is the exciting part for us, and hopefully also for the chosen person. We’ll hire them to join our team! That will happen fast, and the start date will be chosen by the applicant.
We know it’s quite a process to go through, so we want to make sure you know what you’re in for up front. We’ll be transparent with everyone along the way.
One final note, unfortunately due to the quantity of applications we receive, we are not able to provide feedback for those not successful in the first round. In the later stages, we’ll do our best to provide what we can, if requested.
Good luck!
