How we work
We use an adapted version of Basecamp's Shape Up approach, which for us means:
- We work in cycles of 5 weeks of focused work and 1 week of cool down.
- Each 5 week work cycle sees one or more "bets" shipped, each having very specific and well defined requirements.
- During cool down, each of us choose what we want to work on, be it bugs, minor features, tech debt, exploring new concepts, and more.
- Each of us can create an "idea pitch" for an upcoming cycle, and move our ideas along.
As a DevOps Engineer at Whimsical, you'll be mainly focusing on our cloud infrastructure and helping developers be more productive, whether it be by working on automation, scripts, CI/CD setup or other aspects of productivity. And being a small company means that sometimes contributing to other areas of the product, including Back-end or Front-end shouldn't be a deal-breaker to you.
In addition to Shape Up, we also occasionally roll up our sleeves and do customer support to better understand our users and their needs, regardless of our role within the company.
Our primary mode of operation is asynchronous. We use real-time communication with great care, and only where it makes sense. We use Whimsical, email, Slack, and Zoom for our day-to-day communication.
But we also believe in spending quality time together, which is why we try to bring everyone from around the world together at least twice a year for what we call "Whimsical Summits". At Summits we focus on getting to know each other better and building bonds that help us communicate better when we're apart. The ongoing global pandemic has prevented us from doing this for the last couple of months, but we hope to go back to this mode of operation as soon as possible.
About Whimsical

- Partnership Mindset: We’ve built the company around the idea that everybody who joins us should feel like they are partners in the business. Time is precious and we want Whimsical to be the place where people invest their time rather than sell it. Our equity offers are 100% transparent and above market average. We also pay everyone at the same level the same salary, no matter where they live.

We love our values
We’re building a fam, our chosen circle, around a set of values that guide how we work and interact with the world around us. Our cultural norms at work can’t be turned off when the computer’s away — we live these in every part of our lives. Our team isn’t for everyone, so if you’re right for it, the following values should resonate strongly with how you live your life.
We’re intolerant to bad vibes, and genuinely love where we work (and want to keep it that way). We choose our fam by looking beyond a skillset – because roles can change – and surround ourselves with folks we want to spend our lives with.
We aim high and hire smart people to get there — folks that use logic and critical thinking to make the best decisions. We look beyond the problem and quickly build context to come to the right solution; our ever-changing and high-pace environment requires a team of great autonomous thinkers.
When we say “got it,” our team knows we’re owning it, we’re following through, and we’ll deliver beyond expectations. Put the effort into figuring things out yourself (hey, we’re all busy), and actively collaborate if you haven’t Got it; ownership also means knowing when to seek help and to never suffer in silence.
We’re a rare team of folks that genuinely love to work hard because we know that putting in the effort gets the win — we’re the people that started our careers at the lemonade stand. Not at all costs, but we give it our all because our customers are hustling to grow their businesses, and the hustle’s more fun when we’re winning together.
We collaborate for more than the high-fives (although they’re pretty great), and our team thrives on timely and direct feedback. There’s no hesitation in being direct; since we’re surrounded by smart people, we embrace thoughtful and challenging perspectives.

Why Jam.gg?
At the heart of Jam.gg’s mission is the creation of a new way to share games with friends and family: a free online place for gamers to play and hangout together, with video cameras, bringing back the golden era of multiplayer couch gaming. In a world of constraining internet connections and paid services, we think differently: we are building a free, “low-tech” friendly platform for everyone to jump in, directly from their browser. Our platform is social by design and packed with fun games curated by our community. We want to create new virtual social spaces that fundamentally erge from today's typical social networks, focusing a lot less on appearance and a lot more on experience. We are building a social gaming platform for gamers and for developers, opening new ways to interact with their community.
Our startup has been growing very quickly since the end of 2020, attracting more than 60 international talents from developers and social media experts to designers. In June 2021, we introduced our cloud gaming beta platform featuring 80+ licensed games, including titles from industry-renowned publishers such as Arc System Works, Interplay, Team 17, Coatsink and Data East. Our portfolio is rapidly evolving, with more than 25 free modern party titles arriving on the platform this year, from Overcooked to Blasphemous!
Discovered and supported by Y Combinator (Twitch, Reddit, Stripe, etc), our board of advisors include former SEGA CEO Kenji Matsubara, Zynga co-founders Justin Waldron and Tom Bollich, Crunchyroll’s Kun Gao, and Humble Bundle’s Jeffrey Rosen. Our last round was led by LEGO Ventures and top gaming VC firms.

Full Stack Engineer (Core Platform)
REMOTE
PRODUCT CORE PLATFORM
FULL-TIME
Roboflow is rapidly expanding our engineering team to address the groundswell of user and customer needs. Over 100,000 developers (spanning from students to inidual hackers & hobbyists to startups to employees of some of the world’s biggest companies) have now used Roboflow to build computer vision projects. Soon, every developer will have computer vision as a tool in their toolbox. Roboflow will be for computer vision what Microsoft was for the PC and Google was for the Internet.
The Opportunity
We’re looking for strong technical generalists to contribute to our core product and help us build the foundation for our rapidly expanding company.
As an integral part of our early team, this role will inevitably involve wearing a lot of hats. Wide-ranging curiosity and enthusiasm for ing into abstract problems, coming up with good solutions, and seeing them through to completion is essential.
Our core belief is that computer vision is a foundational technology that is going to transform nearly every industry. This is an opportunity to shape how millions of developers will experience and use it for the first time. Your contribution will have a massive impact.
The Role
You’ll be tasked with a wide range of projects. Each engineer has a realm they focus on, but we’re still small enough that we don’t have the luxury of deep specialization. We’re looking for technical generalists that aren’t afraid to e into a new stack or toolchain if the need arises (but JavaScript and Node.js make up the brunt of the existing codebase).
Most of the things we work on are parts of the core product (which is an end-to-end pipeline for building computer vision projects spanning from image ingestion to annotation to training and deployment) but from time to time we’re also working on things like integrating marketing and sales tools, fighting fires, automating internal processes, and open source projects.
You’ll have a wide degree of freedom to advocate for which projects you think should be highest priority and will contribute to our strategy decisions. If you need a rigid list of tasks spelled out in a multi-month roadmap, this role probably won’t be a good fit.
The majority of our codebase is written in JavaScript, our machine learning and image processing pipeline is in Python. We run primarily on Firebase and GCS, with some machine learning infrastructure on AWS. We’re increasingly using Docker (both internally and for customer facing products like our edge inference server). A lot of our code runs in the browser (including some Tensorflow JS) but we’re also working on building APIs and client libraries in several languages.
You certainly don’t need to be experienced in all of these areas; but should be excited to learn new skill sets as you need them. We also hope you’ll bring some new knowledge and experiences you can share to help level-up the rest of the team.
We’re especially keen to add some rigor to our processes and build the foundation for rapidly scaling the engineering organization (for example: we currently have limited tests and are not using an opinionated front-end framework — things that will need to change over the coming months in order to be able to seamlessly expand the team).
Example Projects
-
- Creating a filtering interface so our users can mix and match their images based on metadata like the time of day they were captured, the GPS location, or custom tags they’ve applied.
- Expanding our annotation tool to support new functionality (like polygonal annotations image segmentation).
- Integrating the core app with external APIs for things like outsourcing annotation tasks and analyzing deployed model performance.
- Streamlining our onboarding flow.
- Deeper integrations with our other products like Roboflow Universe and our REST API.
- Next-generation model assisted labeling.
- Optimizing speed and scalability.
